Much to savour at Future Islands
Future Islands rolled into Liverpool for their sell out gig, Getintothis’ Peter Guy joined the disco inferno.
It’s been a long time coming for childhood friends Samuel Herring and Gerrit Welmers.
The duo who lived mere streets away in Greenville, North Carolina, and formed a band back in the mid-2000s have been shaking their limbs in furious fashion long before David Letterman came calling. Indeed, it’s a long time since they strut their stuff in the basement of Liverpool’s Korova to a crowd you could count on two hands.
Tonight things are different, in the rammed O2 Academy, Future Islands draw upon their years of graft, by winning over a notoriously difficult Liverpool crowd, not simply by over-zealous, characteristic stage craft – but by an armoury of disco-machine-gun winners. They do it with relative ease.

Not that Herring isn’t giving anything other than 100%.
The renowned Evertonian (he sported a Leighton Baines replica shirt pre-gig backstage, while reports suggest he invited the team down to the show; they couldn’t attend due to their Chelsea clash the following day) looks like he swam the Mersey to get here, such is his ringing wet checked attire after the opening 20 minutes.

And while, Seasons (Waiting On You) is the the golden nugget that sees Herring almost tipping head-first into the front row amid a sea of gleeful, welcoming arms, there’s so much more.
Ran positively tumbles from the speakers gliding atop of William Cashion‘s bass pangs, Through The Roses is some kind of Patrick Bateman waltzing 80s murder ballad while closer Spirit is monumentally huge sending the crowd into a higher state of delirium.
