MYSTRY

With a new fortnightly grime night at the Shipping Forecast set to launch, Getintothis’ Joel Banger looks ahead to the first instalment.

The huge resurgence of grime and its impact stateside, along with the growth of America’s west coast beat scene and its influence on producers in the UK and Europe, has pushed grime and credible electronic music to the forefront of global contemporary music culture. Skepta has taken the U.S. by storm, Kaytranada is headlining shows worldwide and experimental electronic music collectives like Soulection, are pushing the boundaries and recruiting from across the globe, intrinsically linking the sound worldwide.
Hoping to put their own mark on the scene are Liverpool’s BSSMNT, a fresh collective of producers, DJs, MCs and graphic artists. Through their fortnightly parties in the Shipping Forecast’s Hold, the notorious basement club space coined “The Plastic People of The North“, they aim to create a hub to showcase global up and coming talent alongside Liverpool’s own burgeoning grime, electronic and trap scene and provide a platform to experiment and road test new music alongside the anthemic, a place where the underground meets the overground, aimed firmly at the dancefloor.
Starting as they mean to go on with BSSMNT #001 the resident DJ/Producer tag team of Suede Brown and Grey Area will be joined by genre defining beatmaker and DJ, MYSTRY who’ll be making his Liverpool debut. Heralded by Boiler Room as “Grime’s most promising soldier” and by Grime Payz as “THE producer to watch this year“, his distinctive productions have sent shock waves around the grime world. His Pulse 8 track became one of the most sought after instrumentals for MCs to rhyme over, harking back to the original dub plate culture of grime, most notably used by Boy Better Know for the groundbreaking culture clash and by JME for the opening track on Integrity
With more forward-thinking grime and electronic talent (both DJ and live) lined up for the coming months, support slots with Skepta and Preditah it’s a strong look for BSSMNT and all things 140 in Liverpool. A Dancefloor riot is incoming we’re assured.
The first instalment of BSSMNT takes place at the Shipping Forecast on September 23.
