Ahead of their LIMF appearance this summer, Getintothis’ Adam Lowerson checks out Sunstack Jones’ summery new single.
Since the release of their second studio album Roam in 2014, Sunstack Jones seem to have had a bit of downtime. But with shows in the pipeline, such as a performance at LIMF on August 30, it seems as if the band have been working hard behind the scenes writing new music, which has resulted in their dreamy new single Good This Time, which has arrived just in time for summer. Boss.
Set to be released via their own record label, Mammoth Bell Recording Co. the track will be available on clear frosted 7″ vinyl from June 22 at Probe Records and Dig Vinyl, and will feature B-side This Can’t Keep Going On. The single is taking from the band’s upcoming third LP, which is due later this year.
The new track, Good This Time, is a piece of warm, shimmering, hazy psych-pop and feels like a perfect addition to any summer playlist. With its faraway vocals floating beneath a dreamy, meandering guitar line, the song has an ethereal quality, gliding alone in a sun-licked haze. In the past, the bands music from their albums Roam and Surefire Ways to Sweeten the Mind has seen comparisons drawn to fellow Northerners the Verve, and although Sunstack Jones aren’t exactly Britpop inspired, there are some similarities. The languid vocals have a bit of a Richard Ashcroft feel, while the acoustic guitar driven sound is also similar to that of the 90s icons, however Sunstack Jones’ sun kissed psychedelic sound feels rooted in Liverpool’s musical history.
