GIT AWARD 2015 nominee Jane Weaver
The popular Welsh festival’s bill continues to grow. Getintothis’ Andrew Campbell fills us in with the latest additions.
Liverpool dream popper Jane Weaver joins a line-up of indie stars and new wave veterans at this year’s Green Man Festival.
Weaver, a former member of 90s Britpop band Kill Laura, released her critically-acclaimed sixth solo album, The Silver Globe, last year. The psych pop gem netted the 42-year-old her first GIT Award nomination.
Chester indie stars Hooton Tennis Club will also appear at the award-winning festival which will be staged at its usual home on the Glanusk Estate, Brecon Beacons, between August 20-23.
Welsh favourites Super Furry Animals are Saturday’s headliners at the event which has built up an sizeable reputation since its launch in 2003 and has become ‘Wales’s biggest contemporary music and arts festival’. Super Furries frontman Gruff Rhys rejoins the seminal band in May for their first gigs in six years coinciding with the reissue of their 2000 Welsh-language album Mwng.
Rhys enjoyed global success last year with his fourth solo release – American Interior – a concept album that followed the fortunes of 18th century Welsh explorer John Evans. The band last headlined the Green Man Festival in 2008.
Hot Chip top Friday’s bill on the main stage while New York-based art-pop doyen St Vincent closes the festival on Sunday.
New Wave veterans Television and The Fall are among 66 acts announced for the festival which has gained plaudits for its cool family friendly ethical approach.
Other notables gracing this year’s stages include Jamie XX, Goat, Courtney Barnett, Father John Misty, Public Service Broadcasting, Temples, Hookworms, Viet Cong and Slug.
Last year’s headliners included Mercury Rev, Beirut, The War on Drugs and The Waterboys. In the words of an earthy pal who went to the 2014 event: “From the beautiful mountain backdrop of the main stage to the intimacy of the walled garden, the Green Man Festival is excellent wholesome fun – family friendly, compact, green, eclectic, educational and independent with good food, good beer and devoid of bare-chested lager louts.“
Tickets and further details are available from the festival’s website and are £165 for adults. Concessions are available for students and children and Under-5s go free. There’s also options to stay at the site for up to a week with day tickets available for £55.
