LightNight 2015 returns to Liverpool this month with yet another dazzling programme of events, Getintothis’ Emma Walsh gives a run down on the music and performance highlights you won’t want to miss.

It seems there’s barely a month that goes by in Liverpool’s cultural calendar without another highlight to look forward to but LightNight 2015 is perhaps one of the brightest gems in the city’s cultural crown. Building on the success of last year’s spectacular the LightNight team return for their sixth year of arts, theatre and music for one illuminating night of celebrations.

Staged over fifty locations across the city including St George’s Hall, Central Library, The Bluecoat and the Anglican Cathedral, with more than 100 organisations taking part, LightNight can be a little overwhelming if you don’t get your game plan in order ahead of the big night. So to save you scurrying around the city following an florescent glow in the near distance, here’s your handy Getintothis guide to the music and performance highlights you won’t want to miss come Friday 15 May.

Commission: Hex// Light DiVision

In 2014 the Harlequin Dynamite Marching Band and collaborators made shakes across the city with Sound Battle, this year they return to explore the theme Looking into the New World in a live, hypnotic science fiction ritual. The Dyad ManMachines will channel their polarised visions of the future through a mesmerising display of light, music and movement to seek harmony between technology and nature. A free, family friendly performance, you’ll have a few opportunities to catch them on the night:

Creating Our World In Chapter House & Lady Chapel

Ellen Loudon‘s reflective light and sound installations will fill this reverent space with stories of creation and creativity as ambient sounds, projected images and audio of the spoken word will calm the soul and inspire the mind.

A Celebration of Song

At the other end of Hope Street, the Metropolitan Cathedral hosts an evening of capella and choral music with free performances from some of the region’s best choirs and vocal harmony groups.

LightNight hosts music events across Liverpool

The Crossing

Capturing the affinity between Liverpool and New York, this installation will surround visitors with the sounds of the two cities through a celebration of the 175th anniversary of the first Cunard transatlantic sailing. The installation will use 3D sound techniques developed by Heaven 17‘s Martyn Ware.

KYC Sound & Light

Showcasing some of the city’s most talented bands and artists, Liverpool’s Bombed Out Church and Know Your Culture collaborate to curate this music event at St Luke’s combining mesmerising lights and projections to compliment live music from Bella Union‘s electronic pop dup Bernard + Edith, Moats, Alsdous RH, LIVES and Asterisks, with more artists are expected to be announced in the lead up to the festival.

After midnight the hugely popular dot. will take over the church with a very special guest taking charge of proceedings. Not an event to be missed judging by their latest night with The Streets‘ Mike Skinner.

Kaleidoscopic Disturbance 175

High up under the Tower Vault, artist Andy McKeown curates an engaging light project that will hypnotise revellers through the shifting and movement of fragments of cathedral stained glass, set to an ambient soundscape. There will also be choir performances during the evening which are not to be missed. Audiences are invited to bring mats or cushions to view the installation in all its glory by lying on the cathedral floor.

Expect mesmerising sights and sounds at LightNight 2015

Your Clock is Always Present

Deep Hedonia host a night of AV performances in the grand Concert Room of St George’s Hall with performances from In Atoms, Dialect and Kepla in a presentation of new works that seek to challenge our perfection of linearity and the materiality of past, present and future.

Faux Queens

Celebrating equality, respect and freedom as the sun goes down, velvet dynamite DJing duo Faux Queens take to the decks while high energy beams of light mesmerise the crowd.

Disco Glitter Love: Return of the 3 Queens

Once you’ve taken in the sights and lights of the festival the LOOK/15 after show promises an exuberant evening of entertainment with a chance to digest, discuss and dance away the small hours of LightNight as Constellations welcomes LA producer and artists Baron Von Luxxury and London based duo House of Disco.
