After a lengthy absence from the UK stage Sufjan Stevens brings new album Carrie and Lowell to Manchester Apollo as part of his upcoming European tour.
It’s been four years since he graced a UK stage but for Sufjan Stevens fans the long wait is almost over. Following the release of his seventh studio album Carrie and Lowell, the Chicago songsmith has announced a string of UK dates as part of his European tour.
After kicking off in Edinburgh, his second stop off will be at Manchester Apollo on August 31, his only other gig north of London. It will be one of the first opportunities for fans to hear the already critically acclaimed new album live.
A return to his earlier more forlorn folk storytelling, the nostalgic and mournful tone of Carrie and Lowell was inspired by the death of Stevens’ mother Carrie in 2012.
It is an album steeped in darkness with snapshots and recollections of childhood forming a sombre narrative yet the melodic delicacy of each track creates a hauntingly beautiful album. The line “How do I live with your ghost?” on The Only Thing could serve as an underlying refrain throughout.
Stevens will also perform at End of the Road festival in September. Tickets for the European tour go on sale at 9am on Friday 23 April.
