Hooton Tennis Club perform at this year’s GIT Award ceremony
Some of Liverpool’s already-established favourites and an intriguing newcomer have brand new material on their way this Record Store Day, Getintothis’ Patrick Clarke has a listen.
This writer’s distaste for the corporate seizure that’s been bubbling under the surface at Record Store Day has already been discussed, yet despite one’s personal gripes there’s two Liverpool acts out to prove that the quality of their offerings for this year’s event need not be blunted.
First, and to their ever-swelling fanbase in Merseyside and beyond perhaps foremost, Hooton Tennis Club have revealed that Barstool Blues will appear on 7″ vinyl on the day, released through Heavenly Records.
The track, which you can hear below, sees the foursome covering Neil Young‘s 1975 original in their distinct slack-rock fashion, and will appear as a split double a-side release along with their much-acclaimed surf-psych labelmates The Wytches, who release four-track demo Wastybois.
The track follows Hooton Tennis Club‘s recent nomination for this year’s GIT Award on the strength of their sterling early career, and though they lost out on the night to All We Are it’s clear that their breakneck rise is showing no signs of stopping.
The track was produced by fellow Merseysider and ex-Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones, a former GIT Award nominee in his own right.
It’s not all that Merseyside’s got on offer at this year’s corporate pedestal/joyous celebration of all things indie (delete as applicable), with the annual bash also serving as a worthy introduction for newcomer Green Mohican.
As obscure as they come thus far, the solo artist releases four-track CD Kingsway on the same day, though whether it’s an ‘official Record Store Day release’ remains unclear (and unlikely, owing to the fact that there’s just ten copies available).
Released on Rest Relax Records, home of Getintothis favourites RongoRongo, the track melts ambience and drone with an understated thud of electronica for an enigmatic effort that’s as intriguing as it is absorbing.
We can only hope that it’s just the beginning, as Green Mohican could well be the next addition, alongside the likes of D R O H N E, to part of a growing local presence of outsider electronica that’s already starting to cast aside expectation.
