Long Division festival the latest to opt to move to streaming as LONA release a new single, Getintothis’ Lewis Ridley with the news as the Unusual Art Sourcing Company are keeping people safe in style.
The Liverpool Philharmonic has launced the sixth edition of its popular Christopher Brooks Composition Prize for young composers in the north west.
The prize is open to any composer aged 18-30 living, studying or working in the counties of Merseyside, Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, and Greater Manchester who is not represented by a publisher (self-published composers will be eligible).
The prize represents Liverpool Philharmonic’s commitment to the commissioning and performance of new music and supporting home-grown talent.
The prize-winning composer will write a new work for an ensemble from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. A cash prize of £1,000 has been made possible through the support of the Lancashire Sinfonietta Legacy Fund and The Rushworth Foundation.
The composer will also receive one year’s complimentary membership of the Ivors Academy, and will be supported with a bespoke programme of workshops, masterclasses and mentoring sessions from industry professionals.
Entries will be judged by a panel which includes leading composers, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra musicians and senior management, and music industry professionals.

Elsewhere in Liverpool this week, the Unusual Art Sourcing Company are the latest local business to come to the aid of key workers across the city.
Emma and Allan would have usually been at Sound City earlier this month, but they are aiming to ensure that we can all attend the rescheduled festival date in September by providing high-quality face masks free of charge.
But, because this is the Unusual Art Sourcing Company, the masks aren’t just normal masks, but are instead crafted from a range of funky fabrics ensuring the people of our region stay both safe and hip.

To live music, and Green Tangerines will tonight (Thursday, 14 May) play live at the University of Liverpool‘s Culture Unconfined streamed festival.
The band, who have also played previously at Getintothis Deep Cuts, are all students or alumni at the university, and join a programme which includes a series of films, performances and creative art to engage staff, students and the general public during the stay at home period.

In gig news this week, Taunton‘s October Drift will come to Liverpool later this year with a gig at Arts Club.
The date is part of a UK tour, celebrating the release of their debut album, Forever Whatever.
The date, one of the many rescheduled affairs that will fill the gig calendar at the back end of 2020, is on Wednesday, October 21.
There’s also a new date for The Districts, who will come to make their Liverpool debut later this year.
Their debut LP, You Know I’m Not Going Anywhere, was released earlier this year and support will come from BRNS.
They’ll play Arts Club on Friday, October 16.

Elsewhere, Wakefield’s Long Division festival has announced LD:TV – a collection of new and live digital content from artists including Billy Bragg, The Wedding Present and The Lovely Eggs set to take place over the festival’s original date in June.
Originally due to take place from the June 4-7 in venues across Wakefield, the festival made the difficult decision in March of this year to postpone the event until November 2020 with almost all artists ready to perform on the new date providing it is safe to go ahead.
The event is free to air, however any funds raised from the program on Saturday, June 6 will go to Help Musicians while those raised from the second will be split between #WakefieldCares and pa
Our new track this week comes from Liverpool collective LONA, their second release of 2020, Wonderland.
Sharing their insight on their newest single, the band said this: “Right now, more than ever, we feel like we’re living in a Wonderland. These times are so confusing, lonely and scary. It’s hard not to get down in these surreal times. It feels like we are stuck in a real-life movie. We lose sight of the bigger picture, how amazing us humans can be.”
