Save the date: Africa Oyé reveals festival weekend for 2020

Africa Oyé has revealed the dates for the 2020 festival and you need to be in the park for this one, Getintothis’ Peter Goodbody has the score.

The 28th annual Africa Oyé festival will take place in Liverpool on June 20 and 21, 2020.

Following an incredible 2019 which saw Africa Oyé break its single-day attendance record, take home two awards at the inaugural Liverpool City Region Culture & Creativity Awards, and see itself included on the Liverpool edition of Monopoly, the largest celebration of African and Caribbean music in the country has announced its 2020 festival dates.

Sefton Park will once again be taken over by the music and culture of Africa and the Diaspora, for two free days of fantastic live music, DJs and dance, as well as workshops, food stalls and a range of traders in the Oyé Village.

It is remarkable Oyé can stay free year after year and continue to produce such heavyweight line ups, but it does need support from the end users to keep it that way.

Buying Oyé branded merchandise helps, or simply making a donation. Africa Oyé is a registered charity and all proceeds go back into the festival.

Oyé’s Artistic Director, Paul Duhaney said of the 2019 festival:

“In 2019 we focused on the amazing music from across the wider African Diaspora, so this year we’ll be looking at a more traditional Oyé line-up.

Local artists will once again open the music offering each day via our Oyé Introduces programme, and we’ll again be showcasing community acts, giving some Liverpool creatives the chance to share the stage with world music stars.”

The Oyé Active Zone heads into its second decade of providing festival-goers with free workshops across the whole weekend, suitable for all ages, while the DJ stages Trenchtown and Freetown are also confirmed to return.

This year’s Africa Oyé festival will take place on June 20 and 21, 2020, in Liverpool’s Sefton Park from 12:30pm til 9:30pm both days and entrance is FREE.
