Occult folk shaman Richard Dawson is back with a new album and tour, Getintothis’ Matthew Eland on his upcoming Liverpool date.
Scarcely two years on from 2017’s album of the year contender Peasant, and Newcastle’s experimental folk artist Richard Dawson is back with his latest record, 2020.
Due on October 11, 2020 is described as ‘an utterly contemporary state-of-the-nation study, that uncovers a tumultuous and bleak time. Here is an island country in a state of flux; a society on the edge of mental meltdown.’
This means that 450AD and the kingdom of Bryneich has been left behind, with Dawson returning to the present day.
We’re promised ‘disgruntled civil servants dreaming of better days, anxiety-addled joggers listlessly searching Zoopla for houses they cannot afford in their spare time, amateur footballers who think they’re Lionel Messi and beleaguered pub landlords battling rising floodwaters.’
And it’s all set to be delivered with Dawson‘s trademark mix of meticulously observed lyrics and inspired six-string virtuosity.
As usual, we can expect Dawson‘s dark materials to shine through his lyrics. For The Glass Trunk album, Dawson search the Tyne and Wear archives for the term ‘death’ and found his subject matter in onld news stories about murder and assault.

To support his new album, Dawson heads out on tour, including a long-overdue Liverpool gig, his first in the city since his 2015 Kazimier set.

Two Halves is one of Dawson’s most melodic – even catchy! – tracks to date, shown off through the lens of a tumultuous relationship between a father and child over a childhood football match. Watch below:
