April is looking chock-full of potential classic big nights out, Getintothis’ Steven Doherty has the lowdown on each and every one of them.
Not too much waffle this month as the quality of this our offerings speak for themselves, but just a word about reviews of the gigs themselves.
This website alone has an absolute abundance of high quality reviews, lovingly curated by the writers themselves and hopefully great enjoyment is gleaned from reading them, seeing what other people thought of the same event that you’ve been to, gaining a different perspective.
The best reviews are always the extremes, whether soooo good or soooo bad.
What people should always take into account though is it is just one person’s opinion. We, as a species, thankfully don’t all think the same things, it would be boring if we did and George Ezra would be working in a butcher’s.
Just because you don’t agree with someone’s review of a band doesn’t mean it’s wrong and worthy of attack. A recent example of this was a review of a fair-to-middling indie band, who the reviewer didn’t seemingly like, which as stated above make for the most interesting writing.
Some of the comments the review received were embarrassing, people having a right old dig at someone for having a different opinion.
State of the nation and the times sadly, I suppose.

Ned’s Atomic Dustbin
Love From Stourbridge: Ritz, April 12.
There’ll be no pretensions here, no looking for the next big thing, it will be a certain type of people of a certain vintage re-living their cider-drinking, baggy-short days of yore, using the Ritz‘s springy floor as their very own indie trampoline.
That is not to talk it down, luckily all three of the acts this evening (Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Pop Will Eat Itself and The Wonder Stuff’s vocalist Miles Hunt who is doing an acoustic set and DJ’ing between bands) have all the energy and joy of their audience.
This will be sweaty.

Fontaines DC, Just Mustard: Gorilla, April 13.
The big one this month.
Following on from the release of their debut album Dogrel just the day before, Fontaines DC embark on a short UK tour in venues that are already too small for them.
They destroyed Night People only back last December, and the same again will happen tonight in front of a sold-out-ages-ago crowd, with support from yet another up-and-coming Dublin combo Just Mustard.
They move on to much bigger venues in November after supporting Idles on the US tour, the momentum involved in their rise and rise is staggering.
Beg, borrow or steal a ticket for this.
TVAM
TVAM: Yes, April 13.
If you’ve sadly failed in your begging, borrowing or stealing, then there’s no other better way to spend a Saturday evening than in the company of Manchester’s finest, TVAM.
In support of one of the albums of 2018, the debut record Psychic Data and on the back of their first UK tour last year, they are such a force of nature live.
The unusual set up, two band members flanking a central TV screen on a stand sounds a strange one but it is a truly magical audio-visual concept.

The Real Ink
The Real Ink.: Night People, April 20.
Another Manchester combo, but very different musically are The Real Ink. An amalgam of funkiness, reggae, jazz elements with a hint of Ska present us with an absolute melting pot of noise, coupled with a gleeful vocal.
Not your average set-up, something very different musically and presented with such enthusiasm and obvious love for the material that should see The Real Ink making a splash on a national level.
The latest single Boi has ‘bopping along to them in a tent at a summer festival’ written all the way through it.
Puppy
Puppy: Star And Garter, April 20.
Following the release of their debut record The Goat earlier this year, London’s Puppy are out and about on the road, bringing their three piece metal-pop noise to the masses, taking in the S and G as part of a full UK tour.
Having caught them at the tail-end of last year, they come highly recommended to those who like a sweaty noisy night out with tons of riffs and catchy choruses.
Husky Loops
When In Manchester Festival: Various Northern Quarter Venues, April 20.
When in Manchester celebrates its fifth year with a high-quality line up featuring Husky Loops, Bloxx, Valeras, The Cheap Thrills and the blissful harmonies of Chappaqua Wrestling.
Spread over the whole day at Night And Day, Gullivers and The Castle Hotel, all within very easy walking distance to each other so no comfy shoes needed.
Whatever your tastes, there’s something for everyone and like any good all-dayer, lots of bands that you’ve not yet discovered to enjoy.

Deafkids
Deafkids: Soup Kitchen, April 21.
Brazil’s finest export since Richarlison, the raw, monstrous trio bring their primal growelling to the Soup Kitchen.
Let’s hope the venue has reinforced their ceiling as this is going to largely go off. Their racket could be designed for venues such as this, with new album Metaprogramacao to promote, this is gonna be massive in every sense of the word.
The Blinders
The Blinders: Ritz, April 27.
After Getintothis’ first encountered them at last year’s Sound City festival in Liverpool, it’s fair to say that The Blinders have gone from strength to strength, playing bigger venues until now, their biggest (adopted) hometown show.
Currently on a lap of honour promoting their tremendous Columbia album, they are in the form of their young lives and however big the album sounds, it’s increased ten fold live.
In a month of such highlights, this is another one you’ll kick yourself over should you swerve it.
