Super-tight kraut grooves from Echo and the Bunnymen’s keyboardist – Klaus Dinger would be proud.
It was only yesterday we were telling our mate Sean about the joys of watching Michael Rother perform for the first time at All Tomorrow’s Parties back in 2005.
The Neu! guitarist and krautrock pioneer returns to the festival’s Nightmare Before Christmas line up at Camber Sands in December, and our appetites are suitably whet.
But they’ll be a chance to see some first-rate motorik action first-hand – and much closer to home – before then with the arrival of Baltic Fleet at the eagerly-anticipated Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia at Camp and Furnace on September 29.
Baltic Fleet is the craft of Warrington-based Paul Baltic, synth rider with the Bunnymen’s touring vessel, and after teaming up with Sound of Guns‘ Simon Finlay, Will Sergeant and Cast bass player Pete Wilkinson they released in ’08 the Rough Trade endorsed eponymous record.
Now they’re back with Engage, a chugging, malevolent delight taken from an upcoming second album out via Blow Up later this year.
Recalling the characteristic beat of Dinger‘s La Düsseldorf married to Cluster‘s pneumatic sonic electrolysis and a wee dash of Richard Warren‘s Echoboy it’s a textured infectious pop dynamo with enough earthy bite to make it distinctly the sound of Northern England.
