Ahead of their Sound City slot with King Khan the spotlight turns to rising spacerockers Pale Rider as Getintothis’ Banjo is treated to a lesson in goth summer attire, Clint Eastwood westerns and, erm, Satan.
Way back in the heady days of summer 2017, Getintothis went out on a limb and declared Pale Rider to be Liverpool’s best new band.
Such was our faith in Pale Rider, we excitedly compared them to Spiritualized dueling with Storm in Heaven era Verve and described them as ‘like a billowing hurricane’.
Almost 12 months later, Pale Rider can still be described as still in their infancy, but debut single I Run on Rain (cranking up nearly 2000 hits both on YouTube and Spotify) reveals our early praise to have had some substance.
Sounding like a band on their third album, let alone second single in waiting, Pale Rider have an expansive sound that fills your mind with a great wash of noise and cinematic images. Getintothis were right to expect great things from them, as good as I Run on Rain is (and it is), one gets the impression that the best is yet to come.
Those with a taste for being bombarded with FX-laden guitars and songs of epic grandeur could do a whole lot worse than check out Pale Rider’s appearance at this weekend’s Sound City, where the band play Hangar 34 at the entirely suitable time of 1.20am on Sunday morning.
Ahead of all this, Getintothis subjected guitarist Fran Codman to a grilling in the form of our latest 13 Questions feature. So, here we go…
- Where are you and what are you doing?
Currently in my flat going through my hangover ritual of making a pot of coffee and listening to Hunky Dory by Bowie
- What is your favourite film?
- What makes you frustrated?
Nearly everything as I am a notorious crank – this week it’s mainly middle class beauts coming into work and not tipping on massive rounds of cocktails. Should be a stonable offence!
- Recommend one band or album that you think we should check out?
Kyuss‘ Blues For the Red Sun, one of my all time favourites and definitely one of the records that has shaped my input into the Pale Rider sound
- What’s your first memory?
My first memories are all of my grandparents, particularly watching endless hours of Clint Eastwood Westerns with my Grandad – hence the name Pale Rider, which has always been one of my favourites
- What would be your final meal if you were on deathrow?
Probably a pot of coffee and 20 Marlboro Reds
- What was the first gig you went to?
The first gig I ever saw was Black Sabbath’s Heaven and Hell tour when I was about 15 or 16, which was Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio – Lamb of God supported and some maniac nearly knocked me out cold in the moshpit with a flying elbow. Sabbath were fucking ace, though.
Liverpool Sound City 2018 – Top 10 Merseyside acts to see at this year’s festival
- Where did you last go on holiday?
I went to New York about a month ago for the David Bowie exhibition in the Brooklyn Museum which had all of his original costumes, absolutely blew my mind.
- Tell us a secret…
As much as I am a miserable goth, I absolutely love disco. I DJ’d a vinyl disco set just last night!
- Vinyl, CD, MP3 or Streaming?
Vinyl – been collecting for about 12 years now.
- What’s your favourite season and why?
Winter, because I can comfortably wear entirely black every day. Summer Goth is a strong aesthetic but you do end up sweating your bollocks off.
- Do you have any pre-gig superstitions?
When we first started Pale Rider I was so riddled with stage fright that I used to throw up just before we went on stage every single gig, even if I was stone cold sober. Nowadays it takes us about an hour to get our stage makeup on and that usually sorts me out!
- Do you have anything else to declare?
HAIL SATAN!
- Paul Rider play Liverpool Sound City, Hangar 34 this Sunday at 1.20am
