Dutch-New Zealand outfit, My Baby are touring the country with their latest record Prehistoric Rhythm, Getintothis‘ Scarlett India O’Toole caught up with them for a quick-fire chat.
Delving into the ritualistic aspects of the modern day rave, My Baby sought to span cultures and blend genres in their third album, Prehistoric Rhythm, taking the listener on a magical journey of hypnotic rhythm, psychedelic beats and soulful vocals.
The Amsterdam-based trio have reinvented their live antics to fully showcase the sound of the record, emulating tribal celebration and creating a new universe for the audience to become a part of.
It’s been a busy couple of years for the band, having released their debut album Loves Voodoo! in 2013, continuing to spread their hypnotic blues to the present day. They quickly built a loyal following and have played shows such as Eurosonic Noorderslag, Glastonbury and they became the first ever Dutch band to play the main stage at Isle of Wight Festival.
We caught up with front-man Cato van Dyck for a quick fire Q&A:
GIT: Alive or dead; which guitarist, drummer and bassist would form your fantasy
power trio?
CvD: Jimi Hendrix on guitar, Pete Depoe on drums, Larry Graham on bass.
GIT: What’s your favourite song by a Manchester artist? And why?
CvD: Disorder by Joy Division: A bunch of great, freaky, echo effects on melancholic punk music you can even dance to!
GIT: Who was the last act you paid to see and what did you think of them?
CvD: Dutch blues-rockers Dewolff – they smashed it!
GIT: Divulge your most diva-ish moment on tour.
CvD: I’m not such a diva, but the drummer on the other hand…. he requests massages and champagne before and after the show but he never gets it!
GIT: Why should we come to your gig and what’s in your encore?
CvD: Because it’s a proper rave. And for an encore? It’s different every night but last time we did a Sly Stone trance medley in the nude for almost an hour.
GIT: Finally, what’s your hot tip for a new album?
CvD: Oumou Sangare’s new album is hot like a midsummer night’s dream.
