As The Stranglers announce their Definitive Tour, Getintothis’ Banjo has all the details.
Punk survivors The Stranglers start their Definitive Tour with a date at Liverpool O2 Academy, supported by Irish Alt-Rockers Therapy?
The Stranglers have carved a long and meandering path since they first burst into our consciousness as part of 1977’s punk explosion. Even then they were something of an odd fit, with neither their music or their image fitting in with the era’s diktats, but something about them appealed to the emerging punks, and they were soon adopted as part of the scene.
Since then they have released an impressive 17 albums, although there has been nothing since 2012’s Giants. Having been together since 1974, originally as The Guildford Stranglers, they were able to release two albums in 1977, following this with an album each in 1978 and 79. By this time, The Stranglers had moved further away from the punk scene and had garnered a large and loyal fanbase.
Album 5, The Meninblack, brought what many, singer/guitarist Hugh Cornwell included, regard as their highpoint. The Stranglers went on to forge one of the most eclectic and engaging back catalogues from all the Class of 77.

Given such an extensive and well known catalogue of material, The Stranglers are blessed with an abundance of material when it comes to playing live. For this tour however the band are playing their Definitive songs, so we can expect a glorious run through some of the 70s and 80s best known songs from who have defied the odds to still be playing live in 2017.
The Definitive Tour is timed to coincide with the rerelease of their first seven albums, which surely gives us some clue as to what we can expect the band to play when they kick off the tour in Liverpool.
Support comes from Therapy?, who are currently working on their 15th album, due for a 2018 release. With their Troublegum album notching up a cool million sales worldwide, the Irish alt-rockers know a thing or two about good tunes themselves, making this a double header not to be missed.
