Whitney are back with their own spin on two classics and Getintothis’ Mia Hind has the details.
After the release of their second album, 2019’s Forever Turned Around, Whitney are back with two new covers.
The Chicago-based band – led by vocalist/drummer Julian Ehrlich and guitarist Max Kakacek – have released their own takes on the John Denver classic Take Me Home, Country Roads.
The track features Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield.
They have also released a version of SWV’S Rain alongsideTake Me Home, Country Roads.
Covers have been an integral part of Whitney since they formed in 2014, taking on songs by the Everly Brothers and Allen Toussaint early on.
This played an important role in the songwriting process for their 2016 debut Light Upon The Lake.
Talking about Take Me Home, Country Roads, Kackek explains: “We knew that Katie was destined to sing this with us. We both heard her live and she has this classic country vibe. Once we heard her voice on it, it was pretty much magical. Her contribution is perfect.”
About Whitney’s rendition of the SWV classic, Ehrlich added, “My relationship with SWV goes back to my UMO days, when I was 19 in the van and listening to ‘Right Here’. I’ve been obsessed with them since I was a teenager. The song interpolates Jaco Pastorious’ ‘Portrait of Tracy’, which is one of my favourite basslines ever.”

Whitney have also announced they will be performing a live streamed set via NoonChorus this Thursday, 4th June.
All proceeds will go on to benefit the National Independent Venues Association.
