Cult icons Guided By Voices announce a reissue of Alien Lanes to celebrate its 25th anniversary and Getintothis’ Max Richardson has the details.
Guided By Voices’ Alien Lanes is set for a vinyl reissue in celebration of 25 years of the record, originally released in 1995.
The lofi rockers are no strangers to the recording studio, boasting thirty studio records including fourteen released since 2012, yet the group are looking back in time to their eighth studio record for a re-release on coloured vinyl.
In promotion of the upcoming reissue, Guided By Voices have shared a new music video for My Valuable Hunting Knife, one of the classic tracks from the album – filmed at home amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
The video is both edited and directed by frequent Guided By Voices collaborator Mike Postalakis, and features footage of the group at home during the lockdown, alongside footage of comedians.
Clips are recorded from the bathtub, the car, and the garden – and the video even incorporates cats seemingly dancing to My Valuable Hunting Knife, albeit with the persuasion of their owners.
My Valuable Hunting Knife is a frequent favourite for lovers of the group, drenched in the group’s signature scuzzy lofi charm.
For a group such as Guided By Voices, whose work often sounds rough around the edges, a homegrown music video is a perfect fit – and really suits the charming rawness of the track.
It’s strange to see a new music video released for a twenty five year old track, but then Guided By Voices are far from a conventional band, seemingly releasing an album every six months or so.

2020 has already seen the group release LP Surrender Your Poppy Field, and judging by the releases of Zeppelin Over China, Warp and Woof, and Sweating The Plague in 2019, it’s a fairly safe assumption that we’ll likely see more released from the group in the coming months.
Indeed, it’s even rumoured that the next studio record by the group is in production, allegedly titled Mirrored Aztec. Perhaps the group are just picking words out of a hat at this point to name their records – could you even blame them?
Alien Lanes is due for reissue on coloured vinyl this summer, limited to 2,500 presses.
