The ongoing covid-19 pandemic is threatening the very existence of Merseyside’s oldest music therapy charity, Getintothis‘ Nedim Hassan brings us the latest.
Getintothis has learned that Merseyside’s longest-running music therapy charity is in danger of closure, due to the financial pressures imposed by the ongoing pandemic.
For over ten years, MusicPlace North-West has been providing music therapy services across the region.
The MusicPlace therapists have worked in schools, supporting children with learning difficulties and mental health issues.
They have also worked in NHS units to provide support for people recovering from strokes and for people with acute mental health problems.
The skilled therapists enable people to make music on their own terms and make improvements to their health and well-being.
Now, their ability to provide these services is under threat.
They are continuing to try and provide support to vulnerable and isolated people through on-line sessions, however, with all face-to-face therapy cancelled, schools closed and hospitals imposing strict social distancing measures, MusicPlace North-West’s team of music therapists are largely unable to work.
Director Mary Clayton described the stark situation for the charity as follows: “Music is a vital resource for communication and health and because of Covid-19, our music therapy service has never been more needed. But never before has the survival of our service been so threatened.”
In order to maintain the work that it has carried out in the heart of the Merseyside community for a number of years, the MusicPlace North-West team have launched a fundraising campaign.
They are seeking to reach a target of £5000, which is the minimum that the charity needs to ensure that its therapists can continue to operate once restrictions are lifted.
People can donate at their Local Giving page and can find out more information about the work that they do by visiting their website.
