Oxy, a New Wave Musical

The Alarm’s Mike Peters brings us a free stream of his new wave musical, Oxy, and Getintothis’ Banjo tells you what it’s all about.

The lockdown streaming feast continues as Mike Peters of The Alarm brings us the latest of their successful weekly Big Night In With The Alarm series of events.

This Saturday, April 25, Mike Peters and wife Jules present Oxy, a ‘lifesaving new wave musical’, written by Peters along with Steve Allan Jones and Paul Sirett.

Oxy looks at ex-punk Andy who decides to get his old band, Oxy and the Morons, back together and party like it’s 1978. Not easy when the band split up amid a riot of rivalry, jealousy and bitter betrayal.

As part of his mission to reform his band and relive his youth, Andy hais forced to look at repairing relationships with both friends and family.

There is also the question of whether the spirit of the times can be rekindled some 30 years later.

The shows organisers tell us that Oxyhas life affirming theme that literally helped save a person’s life during its first production run at the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich – by premiering online during the lockdown it might just save even more as, through association with the cancer charities Love Hope Strength and DKMS, there will be an online bone marrow donor drive taking place throughout the evening.’

The invitation to this event tells us to ‘turn your home into a theatre for the night. get dressed up, prepare the pre-show dinner and chill the drinks for the interval and play the music loud and pogo along from the best seats in the house – your front room!

Peters was an attendee of the Eric’s matinee shows in Liverpool before forming The Alarm in 1981. The band went on to worldwide fame with their single 68 Guns.

In 1996, he made a recovery from lymph cancer only to be told in 2005 that he was suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Peters‘ response was to throw himself into charity work, eventually founding the Love Hope Strength foundation, who have raised over a million pounds through their endeavors.

Peters was awarded an MBE for his charity work in 2019 and commented afterwards “I am completely overwhelmed and just so grateful to have been included on the New Year’s honours list. MBE must stand for a ‘Multitude of Brilliant Efforts’, because that’s what lies behind everything that I’ve achieved. Not my own efforts, but other people’s.

Love Hope Strength Foundations, which I co-founded here and in the USA, have saved lives and changed lives over the past decade. This is thanks to the support of hundreds of volunteers, thousands of supporters (including our brilliant Alarm fans) and a great many musicians who have got behind the cause.

My being awarded this MBE is all down to their collective brilliant efforts. This MBE really is for them.”

The live broadcast of Oxy will also feature interviews with the cast, writers and production crew.

Oxy will be broadcast live on Facebook on Saturday April; 25 at 7.00pm.
