Perfume Genius returns with a new album and single, Getintothis’ Banjo has the details.
Perfume Genius, aka Mike Hadreas, will release his 5th studio album, Set My Heart On Fire Immediately on May 15.
Lead single Describe precedes the album, having been released on February 25. Of the single, Hadreas says “It started as a really somber ballad. It was very minimal and very slow. And then it turned into this beast of a song.
I started writing about when you are in such a dark place that you don’t even remember what goodness is or what anything feels like. And so, the idea was having someone describe that to you, because you forgot or can’t get to it.”
Describe is a hard song to pigeonhole, mixing industrial bass rumblings with ethereal floating vocals.
Set My Heart On Fire Immediately features collaborations from legendary bass player Pino Palladino, Matt Chamberlain and Rob Moose.
The album looks at concepts of masculinity and introduces decidedly American musical influences. It plays with themes of love, sex, memory and the body and is the culmination of a period of prolific creativity for Hadreas, during which he also co-directed, wrote and starred in a dance and music theatre production called The Sun Still Burns Here.
