Bank Holidays come six times a year, and this week sees a big weekend full of stuff, Getintothis’ Steven Doherty and Simon Kirk spoil us for choice.
So, things seem to be heading back to normal. Despite the successful opening of Jimmy’s it’s been quieter than usual for gigs. School holidays, people travelling abroad trying to find a bit more sun. A lack of football…
With the football season kicking off last week, it seems to have kick-started everything else, including gigs, with plenty going on this week as we head into the Bank Holiday Weekend.
There’s something to suit everyone’s musical tastes this week. Parrjazz are once again at Phase One on Tuesday Night. The Kaz’ Stockroom provides everything where the weird and wonderful is concerned.
The Zanzibar has your more conventional offerings, while The Shipping Forecast host what we believe is this week’s finest gig in Los Angeles psychedelic rockers, Wand.
Then there’s the Bank Holiday Weekend, of course, and those who lean on the side of hedonism. Yes, Creamfields is back and judging by the weather forecast, those of you attending may be in for some luck. With that in mind, we urge you to take the factor fifty.
Enjoy your week, but add a bit more spice to it by attending one of these:
Parrjazz introduces Phil Johari and Samurai Kip: Jacaranda Phase One, Tuesday August 20
Parrjazz introduce yet another night where the finest jazz and blues talent across the northwest share the stage.
Liverpool and Getintothis favourites, Samurai Kip, will be joined by Manchester’s Phil Johari and his band in what will be a melting pot of fine musicianship.
No better way to spend your Tuesday night than here.
Spine #12 ft. Slow Knife, Lonesaw, Red Kevendra: Kazimier Stockroom, Wednesday, August 21
If a picture tells a thousand words, then the above pic should have you booking tickets for this one already.
This is number 12 of an event which celebrates the more experimental, darker edges of the city’s music scene, and is becoming more and more of a success each time.
This time round it’s Slow Knife, the earth-shattering Lonesaw and Red Kevendra.
If you like something different to your noise, this will be the place to be.
Wand: The Shipping Forecast, Wednesday, August 21
Los Angeles quintet, Wand, arrive on Merseyside on the back of their brilliant new epic long-player, Laughing Matter – the band’s fifth and arguably their best.
Combing the perfect elements of pop and psychadelia, we think this one is hands down the gig of the week and another fine addition from Harvest Sun. Support comes from Gang.
Fuss: Zanzibar, Thursday August 22
See what all the Fuss is about (see what we did there?).
Five bands for three quid would be great value, regardless of the bands, but this is a high-quality night out.
Fuss are joined by Hull’s The Froot, Them Heavy WIGs, Crawlers and Lady, also from out-of-town (in their case, Leeds).
All of whom have a psychedelic bend, so if that’s your thing then get involved.
Peter Broderick and Friends Play Arthur Russell: 24 Kitchen Street, Thursday August 22
American musician and composer, Peter Broderick, along with his band hit Kitchen Street to pay tribute to Arthur Russell‘s ever spanning body of work.
The former member of Efterklang will be reinterpreting everything from Russell‘s New York avant-garde phase to indie and disco.
Creamfields: Daresbury, Friday August 23 to Sunday August 25
Technically not Liverpool anymore, but it’s so ingrained in the culture of the city that it feels like it’s still one of ours.
This year’s highlights include Glastonbury second stage destroyers The Chemical Brothers, Fat Boy Slim, Carl Cox, The Black Madonna and so much more.
