Bill Drummond brings his new film and book to Liverpool and Getintothis’ Gary Aster prepares himself for a one night stand.
Bill Drummond makes another return to Liverpool this September for, among other things, a screening of director Paul Duane’s new documentary film Best Before Death.
Two years in the making, the film accompanies Drummond to India and the US – two stops on his ongoing 14 year world tour which began with him sailing a self-made bed-as-raft along a canal beneath Spaghetti Junction in 2014, and which is planned to conclude in 2025 in Damascus, though for obvious reasons that may yet prove to be impossible.
On each stop of the tour Drummond bases himself in a different location for as long as 3 months at a time and practices his art.
This may, for example, involve drawing a circle on a map of the current location, baking 40 cakes and giving them to 40 random strangers who happen to live on the circle, or making a bed from scratch with locally-sourced timber using ordinary carpenter’s tools in public.
The film captures the curiosity, amusement and confusion of those who encounter Drummond as he sweeps their streets, shines their shoes and does otherwise unexpected things in pursuit of his art outside any sort of formal gallery space or familiar context.
But the film will form only one part of a planned 3 act play, to be performed by Drummond himself alongside actor Tam Dean Burn and others at Picturehouse at FACT on September 25.

Drummond will also be selling copies of his new book, White Saviour Complex, which will only be made available to those in attendance at any of the screenings on this short tour of ‘One Night Stands’.
Spaces are limited and sure to sell out, so hasten!
