Hawaiian shirt indie-pop icons Friendly Fires return with a new UK tour plus news of their first album in 8 years and a hot new single, Getintothis’ Will Whitby has the details.
After a glorious return to music with an all-conquering reunion show at Brixton Academy, the club-fuelled pop euphoria continues with Friendly Fires’ new single Silhouettes and news of a new album set for August release.
Silhouettes opens with percussive bongo drumming, a sunshine guitar riff with a breezy vocal intro, the Miami sunset pulsating bassline reminds you what you were missing in Friendly Fires’ hiatus. When the chorus hits you’ve already wearing the Hawaiian shirt in your mind sipping a cold one by the poolside trying to do your best Club Tropicana impression.
With twilight interludes evoking scenes of fiery sunsets and hazy evenings the jubilant chorus drives home a rhythmic pleasure to reverberate and stick in your mind for all the sunny days to come. Friendly Fires are back, let’s all get in the summer sunshine and have a boogie.
The summer anthem follows a duo of comeback singles released last year in the get yourself a San Miguel and some sunglasses banger Love Like Waves and the dreamy Heaven Let Me In.
All three of these tracks are to be released on their long-awaited third album titled Inflorescent released via Casablanca Records and Polydor on 16th August.

It’s an album that some fans questioned would ever be made as the wait between this and their last album Pala in 2011 seemed almost forever. But with the return in these exquisite tracks, the fires are still very much alive.
The band summed the new record as: “if the previous records summoned a feeling of yearning and hazy escapism, Inflorescent is much more direct. It’s a record very much about living in the present; about not being afraid, seizing the moment, casting aside doubts and pursuing the things you love.”
The album is a product of the three members Ed Macfarlane, Edd Gibson and Jack Savidge returning to make music after a variety of solo projects in the meantime. Reconvening where it all began in Macfarlane’s parent’s garage in St Albans the trio were apparently in no doubt the band would return to making music.
Inflorescent is released on August 16th via Polydor and Casablanca with pre-orders bundles available. Friendly Fires play a number of summer festivals in the UK playing Citadel, Leopalooza and Standon Calling.
