Dead Sons
Dead Sons, Sheffield’s own enigmatic heroes, blew the roof off the Picture House Social on Friday night at their first gig since 2015, Getintothis’ Conor Mooney was in attendance as they made their eagerly anticipated return.
Shrouded in mystery, Dead Sons made a thunderous return to The Steel City last night at the Picture House Social, in what was the band’s first gig since a one-off reunion in 2015 at the Leadmill.
The band, two of whom were previously members of Milburn, have been on hiatus since 2014, as frontman Tom Rowley joined Arctic Monkeys as their fifth member, playing keyboard and guitar.
Back in September though, a cryptic tweet appeared on their account, which simply read ‘12.10.18’. this was followed soon after by a video stating ‘Dead Sons are back’, and ticket sale dates.

The gig sold out within twenty minutes of going on sale, and a second date was announced due to extraordinary demand.
With no support acts preceding their performance, and needing no introduction, the five-piece appeared on stage and kicked in to ‘Gasoline’ in a business-like manner.
They might have been away for a while, but they settled in effortlessly to their hometown return as soon as the first chord was struck.
They then swaggered through a set consisting mainly of their trademark, apologetically heavy tunes from their first and only album The Hollers and the Hymns, with fan favourites such as Junk Room, Hangman, Shotgun Woman and Stuck In The Maze whipping the loyal crowd into a frenzy.
The set was also peppered with a few other singles, including brand new track Burn Baby Burn, which was released unexpectedly just last week.
Although the album is over five years old and they’ve been quiet for a long time, Dead Sons have built up something of a cult following, which was evident from the buzz of excitement in the room before the gig, and by the loyal crowd’s frantic reactions to every song.
Closing the set with eponymous track The Hollers and the Hymns and disappearing back into the darkness, they left the whole room itching for more.

And more might be coming. They can take huge confidence from their return last night.
There’s still clearly a considerable appetite for their music, and with these gigs under their belts and a new song released, many will be excitedly anticipating the possibility of more new material on the horizon.
Even more so, fans will be hoping for more of these special nights.
