Tom Grennan – will play Hit The North Festival
A new venue opens in Manchester’s Northern Quarter plus new gigs for Fatherson and Cancer Bats, Getintothis’ Lewis Ridley with this week’s news wrap.
North East new music festival Hit The North has announced its first set of artists for next years’ event.
Jake Bugg and Tom Grennan will headline the festival which runs across 12 Newcastle city centre venues in May.
Signed to Modern Sky UK, The Blinders will also perform, they’re currently on a UK tour which included a date at Arts Club. Liverpool singer songwriter Zuzu will also play at Hit The North.
She’s recently gained national radio play and media coverage, and played Phase One on Tuesday.
International Teachers of Pop
International Teachers of Pop have announced details of the release of their eponymous debut album and UK tour.
The album is due for release on Friday, February 8 on Desolate Spools with the band set to play District in Liverpool as part of their UK album tour on Saturday, February 23.
The band came about after The Moonlandingz‘s Adrian Flanagan and Dean Honer bumped in to lead singer, Leonore Wheatley in South Yorkshire where they decided to try writing to write a song together and to see where it might lead.
Now, they release their debut album written, recorded and Mixed at Dean Honer’s Bowling Green Studios in Sheffield.
The Blinders
Kendal Calling have released full lineup details of their New Years Eve party at O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester, where The Blinders have been added.
They join already announced Everything Everything and Tom Grennan, while Tim Burgess and Dave Haslam will both DJ.
Kendal Calling co-founder Andy Smith is also responsible for the Northern Quarter’s newest venue, 33 Oldham Street. Over three floors, it will combine a meeting place with a recording studio and, in 2019, the areas largest roof terrace.
Smith said: “33 Oldham Street brings together everything I love about the Northern Quarter and adds some extra touches I’ve fallen for elsewhere. It should be the kind of space you pop in for ten minutes and leave five hours later – we want people to come to here because it’s special all the time, and free to get in. The festivals are amazing but take a whole year to plan and then, boom, suddenly they’re over. I’m really excited that this gives a space to curate the whole year through.”
Liverpool label Anvil Records have made their latest signing in the form of Caveparty (above). They join fellow Merseyside bands The Bohos and SPILT on the label.
The noise pop band, Miru Song, Ric Ulloa, Liam Crosbie and Josh Grant pride themselves of creating something authentic, while retaining elements reminiscent of the past. They play The Jacaranda for Capeesh’s Kick.Out #9 with Deja Vega, Goa Express and Jamie on Friday, December 14.
In gigs, The New Coast will play Sound on Wednesday, December 5. The duo of Nick Blyth and Chris Cheater formed in London.
Synthesizing their own brand of dark pop music with their love of the Silver Screen, the duo’s records create a sense of space and time, embodying emotion and experience rather than recounting situations.
Fatherson will play Jacaranda Phase One on Friday, March 1 as part of their UK tour. They released their latest album, Sum of All Your Parts last month.

Finally in gigs, Cancer Bats will play the same venue on Thursday, January 31 as part of their UK tour.
This weeks new track comes from Bradford desert rockers GRDNS. Hydraulic Lover comes from their debut EP, a fierce slap of Northern grit.
Frontman Jacob Lyons stated: “Hydraulic Lover is about accepting all the bad attitudes, stupid shit and low vibe activities you get up to when you’re young. It’s the idea that song people treat each other like sexbots and the action of love is more hydraulic than passionate.”
