Hookworms split up and release statement following their singer Matthew Johnson being accused of physical and sexual abuse.
Hookworms have split up following singer Matthew Johnson being accused of physical and sexual abuse.
The band posted a note on social media after Alanna McArdle – formerly the singer with Joanna Gruesome, and MJ’s ex-partner – posted a statement online detailing allegations of abuse against MJ, real name Matthew Johnson.
The band’s statement, posted via their Twitter account, is below.
The statement by Alanna McArdle details (below) “horrific abuse” and claims that MJ has admitted to these charges via text message.
McAardle, the current singer of Ex-Vöid, claims to have been contacted by an unnamed woman who has detailed a series of alleged physical and sexual assault allegations against Johnson.

Matthew Johnson is a key figure in the UK underground, with his role as a producer incorporating all manner of left field projects.
Leeds-based Hookworms have enjoyed a hugely successful year, with their Microshift LP reaching a fresh level of acknowledgement.
The band also have a strong connection with Merseyside music having played almost all of the city’s venues, Liverpool Music Week, Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia and produced videos in Liverpool.
All of the bands dates have been cancelled – and following the details that emerged, The Orielles posted this tweet earlier in the day.
In response to upsetting accusations made against MJ from Hookworms concerning sexual and physical abuse, we have decided against playing with them at their Leeds town hall show in February. (1/2)
