Liverpool music gig guide: Doyle, Smithdown Road Festival Fundraiser, Brazilica Festival and much more

The first true week of July gigs is brought to you by Getintothis’ David Hall, with the pick of the coming seven days’ live listings on Merseyside.

The blank page stretches out before the author like an unknown horizon. It’s a space of endless possibilities. But if depression is viewing a situation with a terminal lack of choices, then anxiety is a feeling being overwhelmed at a profusion of possible actions.

The blank page is not an avenue but a wilderness. An anxious, unpopulated tundra which the author must venture out into. It’s a precipice, in which the reader’s expectations are felt to roll like a tide over the author.

Second guessing is its dominant characteristic. Is what I’m writing good enough? Will others view what I’m writing to be good enough? Whether the reader be entertained, or informed… mostly, will my intentions be seen and felt in this writing?

What to fill that blank page with; how to populate the unknown horizon. That is paramount in the author’s mind, and must be overcome. Some break up that unforgiving white space with scrawl, and be guided by their instincts. Others live inside their own mind first, before something falls out, fully formed, onto that page.

How to conquer that white space is up to the individual author.

Why did we start the Gig Guide like this? Well, we’ve got to think of something original to write every week. Also, because of pathetic fallacy; don’t mention the weather. Then definitely don’t say “it’s coming home”.

Doyle: Arts Club, Thursday July 12

Founding member of uber-influential splatterpunks Misfits and all around ghoul Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein hits the Art Club this week.

Aside from being torture chamber punks, Misfits also famously laid the foundations of thrash metal. The first release from Doyle’s eponymous band Abominator is a return to that metallic sound, so prepare for a heavy night midweek. Support comes courtesy of Off The Cross and KING Creature.

Smithdown Road Festival fundraiser featuring Strange Collective: Phase One, Friday July 13

Jacaranda Records’ new digs – live venue Phase One – has its latest party night at the weekend.

It comes in the form of a stacked lineup headed up by Strange Collective, for the benefit of Smithdown Road Festival. Support comes from Mincemeat, Yammerer, Crapsons, Last Reserves and Kelly McGrath. Organisers also promise special guest DJs, yet to be announced at the time of writing.

Brazilica: Pier Head, Saturday July 14

The free Samba festival featuring music, DJs and drumming to keep you dancing returns to the Pier Head this weekend. The relentlessly colourful line-up includes Agathe Iracema, The Fontanas, Aleh Ferreira, Sueli Gil, and Penya. It all takes place on the waterfront from 12pm to 8pm.

After hours, there’s a carnival parade beginning in Abercromby Square at 8pm through the city centre to Williamson Square. There’s also a Brazilica afterparty at Camp and Furnace, plus a live set from Muntchako at Constellations at 9pm. Busy, busy!

Circa Waves DJ Set plus Tracky live set: Shipping Forecast, Saturday July 14

It’s not every day that we draw your attention to a DJ set on the Gig Guide. But then it’s not every day that a band like Circa Waves turn up to drop a city centre DJ set. It’s all for free, and it’s taking place in the Shipping Forecast.

Plus there’s a live set from everyone’s favourite scally-popper Tracky. Well, as live a laptop-powered electro pop lad with a guitar gets, anyway. It’s bound to be a good one.

The Hunna: Olympia, Saturday July 14

Moving up the ranks in terms of venue sizes quicker than we can keep track of, The Hunna return to Liverpool this week for a sizable Saturday gig.

They’re back to promote the release of their new album Dare, the follow-up to the Top 20 selling 100. No mean feat for the Hertfordshire quartet, who formed just three years ago in 2015.

Idle Frets: Arts Club, Saturday July 14

Saturday sees a busy summer begin for Chester quartet Idle Frets. They play Liverpool’s Arts Club before heading off for dates in Glasgow, then Edinburgh.

They follow up in August with a series of festival dates around the country. First Peaness and now Idle Frets? Seems like in Chester, there ain’t no stopping the indie-popping.

We don’t know if you noticed, but LIMF is getting closer and closer. This year’s event is now just two weeks away and counting. Funny, right? It’s barely been mentioned.

So now seems like the perfect time for us to start planning out the bands and acts to see over the weekend. Pretty handy then that Getintothis have knocked together a Ones to Watch guide for the festival.
