It’s August and that time of the month, so here’s Getintothis’ Sinead Nunes with another thrilling edition of the Arts Diary.
It’s that stage of the summer where we all start to get a bit of festival lethargy. We’ve been to Africa Oyé and LIMF, and battled the crowds for Liverpool Biennial‘s opening weekend. It’s time for a break, and a chance to catch some of the city’s community and independent events – happening at venues as diverse as Sefton Park Palm House and Make Liverpool.
Small Steps Thursday Pop Up
2 August, 5pm-9pm, Make Liverpool, FREE
This local group get together once a month to create, make and talk environment. There will be stalls, workshops and artwork exploring sustainability, climate change and plastic pollution, in a family friendly setting.
Pop down to meet some new people, learn a new skill or stand on your soapbox; its an issue everyone’s talking about at the moment with plastic straws and rising UK temperatures (which seem to be fairly limited to the South…) constantly bombarding us in the news, it’s worth finding out more and how you can help at a local level.
Life Drawing in the Palmhouse
31 July, 14 and 28 August, 7pm-8.30pm, Sefton Park Palm House
This fortnightly art class offers you the chance to hone your figurative drawing skills, whilst hanging out in one of Liverpool’s most beautiful and underrated spaces. Best known for weddings and the odd concert – there was a fantastic line up last weekend for the LIMF afterparty including Auntie Flo – there are some incredible community, wellbeing and artistic events.
Led by a local artist, with a different model every fortnight, and materials provided by Cass Art.
The Internal Chaos
Wednesday 8-21 August, Buyers Club, Free
Following her recent exhibition in Berlin, Liverpool-based artist and printmaker Johanna Wilson (That Girl Prints) will be showing her series of surreal landscape collages at Buyers Club.
Developed over the past few months, Wilson has created a series of hand pulled screen printed CMYK artworks, each with an edition of just 10 or 15. The first 20 guests will receive a single colour folded A3 print on arrival, so what are you waiting for?
Liverpool Horror Festival 2018
11 August, Invisible Wind Factory
Who said Halloween was the only time of year for a scare? If you prefer guts and gore to sunshine and cider, this is for you. Liverpool Horror Club are back with an all-day event featuring panels discussions with filmmakers and actors, a “horrific” market, a horror arcade with old school games and VR experiences, and an evening packed with burlesque, bands and DJs (over 18s only).
Think comic con with more corsets.
Heathers 30th Anniversary Screening
13 August, Picturehouse at FACT
Regular girl, Veronica (Winona Ryder), tries to survive the social jungle of high school by sticking with the three most popular girls at school who are all called Heather. As she meets a sociopath named JD (Christian Slater), her life spirals into a continuous cycle of hate and unintentional murder, as she exacts revenge on her enemies, AKA her best friends.
FACT are showing this dark, cynical and subversive cult classic on its 30th anniversary, to celebrate the movie that gently applied a chainsaw to the conventions of the high school film genre. Don’t forget your shoulder pads.
