As documentary Play Your Gender gets its Liverpool premiere, Getintothis’ Frisky da Silva looks at the music industry’s under representation of women.
The music industry is worth 474 billion dollars globally, the most bankable performers often women, but those in control behind the scenes, the key decision makers, are men.
The stats don’t lie.
Less than 20% of songs are written by women, less than 5% of producers are women and only 15% of record labels are majority owned by women.
In new documentary Play Your Gender, directed by Stephanie Clattenburg, Juno Award-winning producer Kinnie Starr explores why this disparity exists and interviews Sara Quinn of Tegan & Sara, Melissa Auf der Maur of Smashing Pumpkins and Hole, Patty Schemel of Hole, and Chantal Kreviazuk.

Putting the theory if you can see it you can be it into practice, the film, screened on Sat 31 March at 2.30pm at FACT, is followed by a discussion by women from the Merseyside music industry, raising and debating issues from personal experience. On the panel are Yvonne Page, manager of the Dig Vinyl record shop, Pale Rider drummer Sophie Thompson and Getintothis’ Cath Bore.
The event is part of the Doc’N Roll Festival which kicks off today and concludes 1 April.
