Liverpool music gig guide: Getintothis Presents Gnoomes, The Wailers, Once & Future Band, and much more

Providing something to read for those of you stuck in your car for the twelfth straight hour without a Greggs’ pasty in sight, it’s Getintothis‘ David Hall on the guide once again.

Is everybody still with us? After a week of snow like we’ve just had, we wouldn’t blame any of you for wanting to move to far sunnier climes. You know, like the planet Mercury.

Still, if your spirits weren’t dampened by the Beast from the East or Storm Emma or #Snowmageddon or whatever the fuck, you could probably use some cheering up.

Things, as Dr Brian Cox’ kooky side project D-Ream once sang, can only get better. And that guy should know. He’s got to go into work every day and deal with things like the inevitable heat death of the universe. What an optimist.

So take a look down this week’s gig listings, and try telling us there aren’t plenty of reasons for a Merseyside music lover to be enthusiastic this week. Full details after the jump.

Gnoomes: Buyers Club, Tuesday March 6

It’s a big one folks, as we welcome former Psych Fest honourees and Russian cosmonauts Gnoomes, who are beamed down to the Buyers Club this week by Getintothis. With no PYZK this year, we’re only too happy to fulfill your wig-out needs.

In conjunction with our good friends over at CMD Presents, Gnoomes should send us to another dimension. Be there or be a spectral square on a cerebral plain.

The Stranglers: O2 Academy, Tuesday March 6

It’s a double header of old school and older than old school punk early this week, as The Stranglers visit Liverpool, backed on the bill by Irish troublemakers Therapy?.

Although their near four and a half decades as a group have taken The Stranglers into genres such as new wave, pop and goth, it’s their punk roots that we all think of when their name trips off the tongue. So when pairing them with 90s punk metal favourites Therapy?, it’s a night we’re looking forward to.

The Wailers: O2 Academy: Wednesday March 7

Who? Yep, those Wailers. The reggae band drop by Liverpool this week and – probably after getting over the nervous shock of the temperature they’ve landed in from Jamaica – will bring nothing but the most positive of vibrations to the O2 Academy.

Mark Sultan: Drop the Dumbulls, Wednesday March 7

Canadian DIY garage rocker and all around mysterious cult figure Mark Sultan swings by Liverpool this week, and visits Drop the Dumbulls over on the wrong side of the tracks.

With a support bill boasting noisemaking local talent Mincemeat and Eyesore & The Jinx, there’s plenty to be had down in the docklands this midweek.

Joseph J. Jones: Studio 2, Wednesday March 7

Tipped in many quarters as one of the next big up and coming UK male acts of the year, baroque voiced youngster Joseph J. Jones has enjoyed big name support slots and now steps things up into a solo tour.

Parr Street’s Studio 2 is bound to provide an appropriately intimate setting for triple J, as we encourage nobody to call him.

Once & Future Band: Shipping Forecast, Friday March 9

Here’s one that has definitely snuck up on us, courtesy of regular Merseyside purveyors of good taste Harvest Sun Productions.

In the midst of a UK tour, Californian four piece Once & Future Band are a truly unique prospect from Castle Face Records, like if The Flaming Lips stole a UFO and ram raided a planet of candy while playing Pet Sounds at full volume. Yeah.

The main event needs its support acts, and this week as no exception, as Getintothis‘ Gigbites has plenty to tantalise:

Loma: Buyers Club, Friday June 8

Sub Pop‘s latest export Loma have just released their deliriously-received, self-titled debut and luckily enough have announced that they’re swinging by Liverpool to celebrate. Well, not exclusively of course, as part of a UK tour; as great as this city is, most bands don’t just come here to clap about dropping a record.

Anyway, the Texas three piece will no doubt be dropping deliciously hypnotic cuts like the atmospheric but danceable Relay Runner, which you can check out below, when Loma hit Buyers Club in early summer. We’re looking forward to it, and hopefully so are you.
