Catholic Action took to the stage at The Shipping Forecast, reminding Getintothis’ Scarlett India just how good pop songs can actually be.

Kicking things off was Chester-based three-piece, Peaness. Whilst they appeared slightly nervous and new to the scene, the girls filled the intimate venue with fuzz-pop songs.

Peaness’ breezy melodies flowed through the crowd, infecting the audience with their catchy songs.

A clear favourite was Oh George, a song that highlights the band’s knack for creating sweet indie-pop songs that are filled with expressions of social criticism.

Liverpool-based SPINN then continued the jangle-pop sound as they filled the stage with energy, with frontman Jonny dancing around.

The band has a sound reminiscent of The Smiths and soon have the crowd dancing along to their jangly guitar riffs.

This gig allowed SPINN to demonstrate the talent they have for creating infectious pop songs with chiming guitar riffs; songs that will surely stay with audience members days after the gig.

They certainly left the audience well and truly spun.

Smithdown Road Festival: “After Hope & Glory everything has to be perfect”

To anyone who thought that 70’s glam rock was a dead-and-buried genre, Catholic Action proved them wrong; their songs having the right mix of classic pop melodies and rock guitar riffs.

The Glaswegian four-piece is fronted by Chris McCrory, a long-haired, engaging frontman who seems to have funny quips ready for any occasion.

Catholic Action’s Rita Ora was a song that proved popular with the crowd. It was an indie-pop gem that had audience members dancing and bobbing along.

The band can’t seem to escape Liverpool, having recorded their first album here and with their record label being based in Liverpool.

Catholic Action won over the crowd with their perfect balance between indie-pop melodies and rock’n’roll instrumentals. It was a polished performance that will hopefully hit another Liverpool venue by storm very soon.
