As the year rolls ever onwards Getintothis’ Sinéad Nunes looks forward to the picks of exhibitions, gigs and artist talks over the month ahead.
Winter may not be finally over quite yet- there’s always a chance of snow and ice even after we’ve seen off February, but with nights gradually growing lighter and the thought of Easter eggs on the near horizon, well, maybe things are looking a tad brighter.
Spring is springing, and with that, we at Getintothis are as ever, looking forward to what lies ahead.
No more so than in the world of the Arts and we’ve carefully picked a select bunch of treats for you in the latest Arts Diary.
As usual, there’s a whole heap of things happening across Merseyside and the North West and this is just the tip of the cultural iceberg.

The ladies behind DJ night Meine Nacht take over Radar Radio‘s airwaves, streaming live from 24 Kitchen Street with an 8 hour special, featuring some of the North West’s finest label owners / DJ’s: Lack (Cong Burn), Breakwave (Meine Nacht/ Deep Sea Frequency), Animal (natural sciences), SertOne (Fly High Society), Anz. Termini: Tom Wood in Conversation with curator Thomas Dukes
1 March at Open Eye Gallery, 6pm, FREE (booking required)
Seminal British photographer Tom Wood talks to Open Eye‘s curator about his new book, Termini, based on a selection of images taken over the course of 25 years as he was waiting for the Mersey Ferry or crossing the river (a few of which are currently on display as part of Open Eye’s The Pier Head – Tom Wood exhibition, on display until 25 March). Wood will offer a deeper look at some of the images in the series, and there’s a free rum bar!

SisBis presents Mim Suleiman in association with Africa Oyé

SisBis’ first live booking brings a taste of the summer festival to Hardman Street.
Mim Suleiman is a boundary crossing sing-songwriter, who blends traditional Taarab vibes with dub and disco, mixing drum machines, percussion, synths and ukulele. She has collaborated with some of the biggest names in Africa and Worldwide, including Baaba Maal, Fatoumata Diawara, Damon Albarn and Robert Plant.
Resident DJ Giovanna will be supporting with her latest finds of party music from around the world. The show will raise funds and collect donations for MRANG, Merseyside Refugee & Asylum Seekers Pre & Postnatal Support Group.

Eat Me + Preach: The Cruising Edition
Drag, dinner and disco at Sound, 16 March, 8pm – late, Tickets £15
How to avoid town on St Paddy’s… go out the day before instead. Not only is this the perfect antidote to Guinness hats and fake ginger beards, the line up is brilliant.
Auntie Climaxx is back to host her queer cabaret evening, serving up a three course vegan menu alongside performances from subversive queens Miss Hernia, Kevin LaGrande and Marilyn Misandry (featured in Vice). Later, expect DJ sets from SisBis’ Giovanna and CA$H. Oh, and its a nautical theme, so get your sailor hats and mermaid tails out – there’s a prize for best in show.

States of Play: Roleplay Reality
Exhibition at FACT 22 March – 17 June, FREE
A fully interactive show inviting audiences to enter immersive spaces to play video games designed by leading artists, where the physical space is at odds with the virtual world.
Focusing on the importance of “role-play”, the exhibition considers identity, gender and sexuality in gaming and how by inhabiting another’s character, we may learn something about ourselves. Expect VR experiences, multi-player games, platforms to create your own narrative and opportunities to try out some of the most explosive (and controversial) platforms out there.
The Kazimier Fire Garden: Feast of Fire
30 March, St George’s Hall, £10.50
There’s been a lot of whispering about the “feast of fire” lately, but after much sleuthing, all we can glean is something about an “experience” involving fire and sculpture. In keeping with the mystery, the event description simply reads: A feast for all senses unfurls as the Garden springs to life on Good Friday, see St John’s Gardens in a whole new light, as Kazimier Productions weaves its magic. An outdoor fire show produced by one of the city’s most exciting organisations? We’re in.
