With the new year now in full swing, Getintothis’ Mark Davies is looking out beyond the horizon of all things METAL
So we’ve mostly got all that New Year’s shit out of the way now. There’s still the endless resolutions, the smokers and drinkers who have quit for an impressive seventeen days so far, and of course the gym is completely unusable for all the new members, who will suddenly realise they are more comfortable on the couch by the end of February.
If we sound cynical it’s because… well, we are, but power to the schmucks, if they keep at it things might just get a bit more bearable for them.
If you happen to fall off the wagon though, don’t despair because if there’s one thing that doesn’t quit, it’s metal.
This edition we wanted to look ahead, all misty-eyed and curious, to the future or at least a couple of months into it anyway. We’ve been taking note of all these coy Instagram posts by bands who are slaving away in the studio, so that we can bring you a little teaser of things to come.
If we may leave a small disclaimer here however, some of this is going to be speculative and based purely on previous album schedules and hints from the band members themselves, so please don’t take our word as gospel until the official announcements.
Cracking on then, we have spoken about legendary Polish blackened death-metallers Behemoth on a number of occasions over the years, and with good reason too, they fucking slay.
It has been a very long wait since the release of their genre-defining magnum opus, The Satanist back in 2014; so imagine our filthy excitement when we saw that they were back in the studio with Daniel Bergstrand, recording what we hope will be the follow-up to that aforementioned masterpiece. Fingers crossed for a late spring/early summer release via Nuclear Blast on that as-of-yet untitled record.
News just in, progressive metal act Between the Buried and Me have announced their new two-part album Automata, the first part of which Automata I is due on 9 March 2018 via Sumerian Records, which is extremely exciting given how immensely talented these guys are, and how brilliant their previous releases have been.
Seriously, they have yet to put out an album that is anything less than stellar, with their 2015 record Coma Ecliptic being a particular highlight. No single has been released yet, but it’s gonna be proggy and fantastic, you can bet your last slice of vegan pizza on it.
Another great piece of news is that of German tech-death metal group Obscura. They announced a new album Diluvium, the final part of a four-album-concept they have been working on since the first part Cosmogenesis was released over ten years ago.
The second and third parts, Omnivium and Akroasis were also extremely well-received by fans and critics, so being able to hear them all in one place is going to be quite an experience. Diluvium is set for a summer 2018 release via Relapse Records so we’ll bring you more info on that as we get it.

It isn’t just album announcements that have got us all giddy either, because although it might feel far away, it won’t be long before this frost, hail, and sleet is replaced by mild warmth and marginally less rain. Yes folks, we’re talking about the summer, also known as festival season, mainly because it’s the only slightly less miserable time of the year to put them on.
Of course we have the bigguns, like two hairy brothers who were brought up by different sets of parents, Bloodstock and Download festivals prospectively.
The former, from the 9th to the 12th of August, featuring headline heavy-hitters such as Gojira, Judas Priest and Nightwish, along with other seminal acts like Kamelot, Emperor, Devildriver, and Getintothis faves Septicflesh.
The latter, from the 8th to the 10th June 2018, featuring more radio-friendly headliners such as Avenged Sevenfold, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Ozzy Osbourne, and other acts like Bullet For My Valentine, Marilyn Manson and interestingly, a performance by 90s heavy metal rap act Body Count featuring Ice T.
If there were ever a time that drinking cans of warm Strongbow in a field seemed like a faux pas, it would have to be in the presence of Ice T, who is in turn fronting a rap-metal band originally formed in 1992, surely. Or maybe that’s the perfect time for it? Either way, we’ll find out.
It isn’t just the big ones to look forward to either, with smaller festivals like UK Tech-Metal Fest, Damnation Festival, and ArcTanGent gaining more momentum every year, there’s plenty to keep you drunk and happy whilst the weather does questionable things to, and around you.
With new material also in the works from Rammstein, Dimmu Borgir, Amon Amarth, Anthrax, Devildriver, Exodus and Nile, it looks set to be a fucking heavy year ahead, so keep your eyes glued to our Dysgeusia, and your ears so wide open your brain risks spilling out.
