Maya Law & Allergy Kid
Returning to the helm of Unknown Pleasures, Getintothis’ Jake Marley goes trip-hop crazy with three more under the radar gems.
Maya Law & Allergy Kid are a fantastic emerging duo helping to follow Let’s Eat Grandma in putting Norfolk on the music map. Trip-hop producer Gabriel Gifford aka Allergy Kid creates stunning, wavy sequences that Maya Law pens and performs stark, honest lyrics over to great effect. There’s a clarity and awareness to the often soulful lyrical coating Law applies to the tracks, winding in and out of deft Allergy Kid production – a luscious hybrid of nostalgic hip-hop beats and future-facing electronic trips.
They recently released a debut full length online titled Her or Him featuring a few real gems Never Enough, Can’t Get Calmer (which also has a fantastic instrumental cut) and Kiss Busy. Alongside a treble of tracks featuring a trio of noteworthy fellow breakthrough artists to keep an eye on – High Priest Cabrakan, Harvey Causon and D’lore. In all honesty everything they’ve released to date resonates, this is a duo going far. Very exciting.
Another duo that also recently burst to my attention is London-based Girlhood compromising of the talents of producer Christian Pinchbeck and singer Tessa Cavanna. They came to my attention post debut single but having since popped it on, My Boy is also well worth your time.
Earlier this week however I had the pleasure of stumbling across their second release Say It. It’s evident from the stunning opening beat and key sequence that flows effortlessly into Cavanna’s majestic neo-soul delivery, that this is a very compelling and accomplished pairing. It’s velvety warm, 90s R&B with a distinct modern facelit and it’s bloody brilliant.
Finally we have 21 year-old Toronto trip-hop artist Blaise Moore. She has no chill when it comes to her Laurence EP (an EP that shares a name with the ex she roasts throughout its seven tracks). It’s quite apt that although her revenge pop at the base of it has no chill, it’s quite the hazy dose of trip-hop on some levels. Standout EP track Friends is all fucking killer, no filler ft. absolutely irresistible, sultry beats and endless swagger from Moore. Broody number Fuck It is another standout from a throughly enjoyable EP of jaunty beats and straight-up lush vocal swagger.
