With her new album and a new look, Getintothis’ Del Pike looks forward to a Rockin’ evening with Imelda May.
This May sees the return of Imelda May to the Philharmonic stage after the release of her new album in April.
May, who manages to deliver both rockabilly and country music with equal amounts of vigour whilst attracting both mainstream and niche audiences, is now on the verge of releasing a new album, Life Love Flesh Blood, due for release on April 7.
This time round, May can be found rockin’ a new look. Gone are the trademark 50s frocks and quiff, here’s a new Imelda with a black fringe and dress to match, looking more like a young Chrissie Hynde than a sailor’s tattoo.
Fans may worry that her new album, her fifth following the raucous Tribal (2014), may not be as upbeat and deliciously retro as previous work, but with T Bone Burnett at the desk and song titles like How Bad can a Good Girl be? on offer, we’re probably safe.
The teary singles Call Me and Black Tears (featuring Jeff Beck) show a more polished and possibly more mature approach, which could be down to the brilliant Burnett’s production but is equally a tribute to May’s rare talents.
The Imelda May live experience is an emotional roller-coaster with upbeat floor-fillers and tender ballads melded together with Irish charm and Americana. Channelling the likes of Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson and Brenda Lee, May makes that incredible era of music her own and brings it pounding into the 21st century.
Imelda May will be appearing at the Liverpool Philharmonic on May 15.
