SXSW 2017 have added hundreds of new artists to their lineup and Getintothis’ Jake Marley delivers five more must-see gems alongside plenty of Merseyside acts.
Back in November we reported on SXSW announcing over 200 artists for their 2017 event. Now they’ve kicked off the new year by announcing 498 more including Liverpool outfits All We Are, She Drew The Gun and The Vryll Society alongside The Big Moon, The Japanese House and Maggie Rogers.
Domino Records groove-psych outfit All We Are recently showcased new material supporting Warpaint and are set to follow up their self-titled debut with a new album later this year.
Merseysiders She Drew The Gun also join the bill after winning last year’s Glastonbury emerging talent prize and received praise across the board for debut album Memories of the Future.
Also representing Liverpool among the 498 artists announced are The Vryll Society whose infectious track La Jetee recently made our tracks of 2016 list.
The Big Moon are also featured which shouldn’t come as a suprise considering their hotly-anticipated debut album Love In The 4th Dimension is due on Fiction Records on April 7, making SXSW an ideal destination a month prior.
Trawling through a long-list of over 200 artists and coming out the other side with the gems you desire is easier said than done. So Getintothis have done at least some of the leg work for you. We’ve selected five must-see favourites (in addition to those we picked from last year’s first artist announcement) each detailed below as well as a few tracks from each compiled into a handy playlist for your listening pleasure.
Alexandra Savior
Alexandra Savior has suceeded in winning the hearts of many in her breakthrough year and looks set to win many more when debut album Belladonna of Sadness drops on Columbia Records April 7. She recently released the slick dreamboat Mystery Girl and there’s plenty more to come. SXSW is just the start.
Molly Burch
Molly Burch releases debut album Please Be Mine on Captured Tracks February 2 and spacious number Try is already spreading the word in lovely fashion. Doo-wop chord progressions and lushious reverb levels teamed with stunning vocals. She’s sure to be a name on many lips this year.
AJ Tracey
Brixton Grime MC AJ Tracey has a sound and attitude ready to blow 2017 up. Tracks such as Naila and Pasta are just a taster of what he can deliver with infectious beats and rhythms inspired by lifestyles, affairs, Pokemon and more.
Salt Cathedral
Brooklyn electro-pop duo Salt Cathedral are excelling with ethereal doses of breezy electronic pop and wavy tropical rhythms. Their EP OOM VELT is fantastic and there’s an album coming this year that’ll likely be showcased at SXSW.
The Bay Rays
All set to support Hidden Charms on their UK jaunt this Spring, Tunbridge Wells outfit The Bay Rays look to make their mark in 2017 with punchy rock ‘n’ roll anthems and plenty of noise that’ll certainly announce their arrival on the festival scene this summer, SXSW being the first.
SXSW takes place in Austin, Texas between March 13 – 19.
