Getintothis Jukebox is a monthly new music column featuring an eclectic selection of new releases, lovingly complied into playlist form by Getintothis’ Jake Marley.
We closed 2016 and kicked off 2017 with tonnes of ace new releases. Over the last month or so, plenty of new tracks have been released. With that in mind, you’ve probably had your work cut out keeping a tab on things.
Never fear, Getintothis Jukebox is here to fill you in on all the finest new music releases from around the globe over the last few weeks. All shapes, sizes, genres and guises. Compiled into a neat playlist, perfect for those cold Winter nights in.
We kick things off with the return of Dan Croll with his third new offering post Sweet Disarray, the phenomenal Away From Today, the second track taken off his forthcoming Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Cee Lo Green) produced album. All the hallmarks of old school Croll with an irresistible twinkle, dance and soul elements and a chorus you’ll be singing for hours.
Having further developed his act after supporting Daughter and Aurora last year, Dan Croll will be playing the following dates across UK:
- May 12: Stereo, Glasgow
- May 13: The Wardrobe, Leeds
- May 14: Sound Control, Manchester
- May 16: Heaven, London
- May 17: Mama Roux’s, Birmingham
- May 18: Thekla, Bristol
Staying with the Liverpool link, Zuzu has a second track in the world titled What You Want and it’s bloody brilliant. Not many can compete with Zuzu for honest songwriting with a gritty energetic pulse and all killer chorus. Belter.
North Londoner Harlea stunned us all with debut Miss Me towards the end of last year and she’s kicked off the new year with an explosive second coming packed full of attitude. You Don’t Get It is very Alison Mosshart, Kills-esque vocally probably because it’s in a similar atmosphere musically with bluesy electric guitar lines backed up by a deliciously throbbing bass/drum combo. Bold, infectious and extremely empowering.
Sheffield quartet High Hazels have a knack for nailing the melodies you want to hear but just don’t know it yet. They’ve evolved since last year’s insanely catchy rock ‘n’ roller Misbehave, they quite like a synth twinkle and into minimal psych-pop outbursts these days. Newbie Joined At The Lip truly lovely.
Declan McKenna is developing a bit of a reputation for churning out absolute scorchers. The latest of which sees McKenna fight the corner of the younger generation stating they genuinely care about politics and the world around them. The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home anthemic foot-stomper that’ll go down a treat on his upcoming tour. The kid at the end of the recording is quite annoying though, radio edit please.
Birmingham teenager SEYD has totally blown me away with only her second ever release, the alluring and glittering pop gem, Secrets.
TEEFF the project of Elizabeth Gandolfo has a wonderful synth-trip single beside its name. There’s clear inspiration on Sun Sets East from throbbing early 00s R&B and more present day synth-pop dynamics on an intimate sensual and ultimately infectious cut that makes this project worthy of getting pretty excited about.
Upon hearing Björk call her a “current big influence” on her sound, I had to hear JFDR. Her debut offering White Sun is absolutely wonderful in its own right but now she’s gone one step further with Airborne. Truly magical.
ELKKA is another artist to get very excited about if debut EP Her is anything to go by. Future-facing, future-thinking and future-shaping electronic production, nostalgic beats and straight-up lush vocals. What a debut. Playlisted is the highly-addictive Prey but really you should just give the whole EP a whirl or ten.
21 year-old Brooklyn native Indigo Svn has shared extremely vibey track Window, the first taste of his new EP on which we’re told to “expect the unexpected.”
One of my favourite labels Art Is Hard Records recently put an ace AA from an equally ace outfit Neurotic Fiction out. Second track Generals is just wonderful and the riff breakdown two minutes in is epic.
Liverpool is continously thriving musically, no matter what obstacles are put in the way by big wigs, as shown by one of our finest emerging bands The Cheap Thrills packing The Shipping Forecast to sweaty capacity for their Glare EP launch on Saturday. EP track Same Old Faces is a serious dose of alt-pop band wizardry that’ll mark many a playlist and festival stage this year.
Stockport outfit Kashmere have followed up last year’s fantastic debut single Blow Your Mind with another irresistible anthem in the form of Porcelain. An expertly crafted indie-pop anthem with wistful guitar swirls and a true sound of youth at heart.
Luxury Death are a duo I’ve been very keen on ever since I heard early release Radiator Face, a track that received a fair bit of blog love. Now they’re keen to build upon that hype and are teasing their debut EP with tight rhythmic delight Glue.
Danish duo Sweet Tempest really grabbed me this month with the gorgeous dream-pop waves of Empty Box – a track perfect to let you troubles drift away to under dim light.
London-based quartet White Kite have kicked off the new year by sharing their debut waves, extremely infectious slick synth stunner – Swans.
EAT FAST have burst into 2017 even more fuzzed-up than they left 2016 – that’s pretty fuzzed up let me tell you. New offering Sand Drone is one of the shortest tracks you’ll probably hear all year but it’s also up there amongst the liveliest rip-roarers around.
Cameron Avery of Tame Impala fame has announced details of his debut solo album Ripe Dream, Pipe Dream along with classic pop vibes on lead single Wasted On Fidelity.
Swedish songwriter STORME has shared haunting ethereal gem Soldier, one of three stunning tracks from her debut EP Rootless.
