EVP Sessions
As EVP returns to The Bluecoat with a series of electrifying live sessions, Getintothis’ Charlie Lea has all the details.
The way in which technology is changing the human is an issue we all think about and the EVP Sessions at the Bluecoat on Thursday, December 8 may well help us in our quest for an answer.
Collecting spoken word, performance arts and electronic music the sessions are a collaboration between Liverpool arts group Mercy with London’s Penned in the Margins and take inspiration from Konstantin Raudive’s 1970s Breakthrough in which he drew the voices of spirits out from white noise.
Using guest artists including avant-garde electronic music producer Aisha Devi the sessions adapt theatre, contemporary art, poetry and other performance art.
Swiss based Aisha will be harmonising modern technology and the practice of ritual with her current work based on “sluts, awareness, death, women in a patriarchal society and enlightenment”.

Other guests include Inua Ellams and a new spoken word performance in collaboration with sound artist Ain Bailey, game designer and theatre maker Hannah Nicklin and award winning poet Ross Sutherland with newly commissioned video works.
Mercy’s Nathan Jones sums up the event perfectly,” the programme captures a distinct moment for vocal prosthetics and pseudo-linguistic intelligence, and shows how vital they are to the future of performance.”
Expect to be thrilled, entertained and haunted in a show audiences have described as “mind-boggling” and “perplexingly good”.
The EVP Sessions are at The Bluecoat this Thursday, December 8. Tickets are £7 each.
