The Pies
After three decades as a band, The Pies are set to play a rare live date in Liverpool later this month. Getintothis’ Will Neville checks out what’s on the menu.
The Pies, the mythical local band who have been performing around the North West for thirty years, release their debut album Best Of The Pies on June 24. This includes new songs as well as numbers that have been played live over the years.
The Pies got together in the late 1980’s, but split up before being able to follow the likes of Space and Cast into the big time.
Singer and guitarist Ashley Martin decided to continue with a new line-up, with the band probably more famous for their graffiti around the North West, especially a large version on the M57 at Switch Island, with it being renewed every time it is removed, now up to a fifth version.
As well as Martin, the band includes two original members in guitarist Si Lee and Lee Shone on keyboards, long-time bassist Tony Oxley and Tim Kinch on drums. Other musicians featured include Barbara and Beverley Keenan, who have sung with The Lightning Seeds and The Farm, and seven-year old Kirsty Newrick who sings on the Fathers For Justice tune Batman.
The Pies are due to take the stage at St George’s Hall on Saturday July 23, their first live date in nearly five years. A good time is guaranteed – as Ashley Martin said, “music should move you or there’s no real point to it”.
