Horror master John Carpenter brings his cinematic synth classics in the Autumn, Getintothis’ Peter Guy reflects on a coup for Liverpool Music Week organisers.
Liverpool Music Week 2016 is to be headlined by legendary film composer and director John Carpenter.
Carpenter will play Liverpool’s Olympia Theatre on Friday October 28 and joins the already announced Liverpool Music Week opening party billing of Warpaint.
The American, known as the Horror Master, directed cinematic classics Halloween, Escape from New York and Assault on Precinct 13, while also composing his trademark synthesizer scores which became as celebrated as the films themselves.
Having also directed the likes of The Fog, The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China, Carpenter returned to prominence in 2015 focusing on his music with his first studio album – Lost Themes – an album which married his characteristic chilling sounds to imaginary films.
Lost Themes, which features contributions from Carpenter’s son Cody plus godson and composer Daniel Davies saw the director team up with acclaimed record label Sacred Bones and follow suit with a number of live dates.
Onstage he is accompanied by Cody on synthesizer, Davies on guitar, with John Spiker on bass, John Konesky on guitar and Scott Seiver on drums.

He said: “Lost Themes was all about having fun. It can be both great and bad to score over images, which is what I’m used to. Here there were no pressures. No actors asking me what they’re supposed to do. No crew waiting. No cutting room to go to. No release pending. It’s just fun.
“And I couldn’t have a better set-up at my house, where I depended on Cody and Daniel to bring me ideas as we began improvising. It’s a brand new world. And there was nothing in any of our heads when we started other than to make it moody.”

Having previously announced a Manchester date and released follow up album Lost Themes II in April, Getintothis saw Carpenter in Primavera (review) rating him second in our round up amid a glittering array of festival talent. Now Scousers will have their chance to enjoy the Horror Master himself in a theatre in their own back yard.
