As Laura J Martin prepares to release her latest album, Getintothis’ David Hall has all the details on the Scouse singer-songwriter’s new single Do It.
The single arrives ahead of On The Never Never, the Liverpool-born singer-songwriter’s third album, which drops on March 11 through Shape/Kartel.
Do It is a punchy and pulsing single, buzzing with throbbing synth-bass and an ultra-glossy 80’s keyboard schtick, atop Martin’s coy, breathy vocal.
Favourable comparisons with Joanna Newsom and Kate Bush have followed Martin closely so far, and prove to be well-founded, given the lush and theatrical nature of her music.
The arty, angular Do It is tempered on her new album with some gorgeously warm and stunningly rich arrangements. On The Never Never snakes its way through some beautiful singer-songwriter territory, weaving in some avant-garde instruments and influences, and should surely to expose her to a greater audience.

You can see the promo video for Do It below; it’s an arresting daguerreotype of rhythmic possibilities with a striking monochrome visual style which matches the single’s kooky vibe. The clip comes courtesy of filmmaker and animator Ewan Jones Morris, who has collaborated with the likes of DJ Shadow, The Human League and John Grant, as well as previously with Martin on the video for Red Flag, shot at the Everyman Theatre.
