With an 80s inspired sound shining through his couple of tracks, Getintothis’ Lorna Gray discovers the appeal of L U M E N.
You’d be completely forgiven if your mind goes straight to the jangly guitar sounds of the Coral or the Zutons when you think of Merseyside music. But Liverpool is a multifaceted pool of talent and there’s one young lad turning that scouse stereotype on its head, and that’s 17 year old Aintree indie pop pioneer Liam Brown – making unique, 80s inspired, electronic danceable tracks under the pseudonym L U M E N.
With funky bass lines that could easily be mistaken for the talent of New Order’s Peter Hook, as well as gorgeously smooth vocals to accompany – it’s difficult to believe that this tight and quirky sound from L U M E N stems from the creative brain of a guy that’s not even legal to have a cheeky bevy yet.
Taking inspiration from 80s post punk legends such as the Smiths and the Cure, elements of such can be heard in his catchy guitar hooks and charming, built up choruses. Not forgetting Brown’s more recent stimulus, as little features from the Drums and Bombay Bicycle Club peak in now and again.
There’s only two tracks from L U M E N available to listen to, the upbeat, funky What Will Life Make Of You? which includes an optimistic riff that’s enough to put a smile on your face, as well as the more somber number Sleep, Don’t Wait For Me – highlighting the versatility of the young music maker. If that’s not enough though, you can catch L U M E N at District on November 27 playing with Trudy and Charm Offensive.
