With the former LIPA favourite now on a major label, Getintothis’ Shaun Ponsonby takes a listen to his latest single.
Ady Suleiman has been on the radar at GIT HQ for quite a while. Since his days at LIPA, no less. An agile artist originally from the outskirts of Nottingham, our previous reports on his work set him up as one to watch.
What we love about Suleiman is that he appears to treat music with respect. There are no eras. It’s all the same animal. His latest release, What’s The Score? (technically there is no question mark in the title, but there really should be one, so we took the liberty of adding it ourselves), sees Suleiman in classic pop tradition. He has ability as a storyteller, but this is very much a cat and mouse tail of adolescent love. Its the stuff that pop dreams are built on.
The track is a blend of numerous styles. We’re hearing a dash of R&B, a bit of reggae and – particularly with a verse from Joey Bada$$ – a dose of hip-hop also.
It is equally as fresh as it is classic. This writer is actually just a little disappointed that it wasn’t dropped in the summer rather than autumn. It’s a summer anthem waiting to happen. If this is the direction Suleiman is going in, we are absolutely fine with that.
- Ady plays The Magnet on Wednesday November 11.
