Ron Sexsmith
As The Epstein Theatre prepares to welcome Ron Sexsmith, Getintothis’ Paul Fitzgerald looks forward to witnessing the newer, lighter material from this trusty, well respected and hardworking performer.
You wouldn’t think that an airport luggage carousel could both inspire and influence, but with his 14th studio album, Carousel One, Canadian Ron Sexsmith has found just that. Carousel One at Los Angeles Airport must be somewhere he spends much of his time as he travels between his two bases in LA and Ontario.
Sexsmith has been writing, with his own rich blend of melody and melancholy since the age of 14, harnessing influences such as The Kinks, Paul Simon, and James Taylor. Respect from big hitters such as Elton John, Elvis Costello and indeed, Ray Davies (they played together at The Meltdown Festival, at Davies‘ behest) follows Sexsmith‘s every move.
Undeniably a craftsman when it comes to songwriting, and gifted with a rich and honeyed, plaintive vocal style, his particular style of Americana blues (should that be Canadiana?) helps these well honed songs seem comfortable and familiar even on first listen. While he has, up to now, been widely known for his knack of making us happy by singing sad songs, this new album finds Sexsmith in a lighter, happier mood, positively jolly in comparison to his earlier work, and when he takes to the stage at The Epstein Theatre on October 20, a loyal audience will no doubt welcome him again to Liverpool with rightful and worthy praise.
