Loveless
Having teased us with their debut track Skin several months ago, Getintothis’ Adam Lowerson falls for Loveless’ minimal sound on their new single Mirrors.
They gained our attention with the minimalistic pop perfection of debut single Skin and teased us further with their first live appearance supporting Circa Waves at their Kazimier homecoming, before disappearing again into the shadows. After a quiet start to 2015, with only a gig at 24 Kitchen Street to suggest any signs of activity, there finally seems to be signs of life again from former Fly With Vampires frontman Phil Styles’ new band Loveless with their new track Mirrors, which can be heard exclusively below. It was well worth the wait.
Skin was the perfect introduction. Its grooving bass, falsetto vocals and understated sparks of synth announced their arrival as future major players on the Liverpool scene, and suggested a complete reinvention from Styles’ days with indie rockers Fly With Vampires.
Mirrors picks up where it left off with more slick drum machine beats, dreamy vocal harmonies and delicate synths. Where Skin has an upbeat alt-pop feel, Mirrors is a more languid affair, slowly grooving along through the sparse verses before shimmering electronics lift the chorus ever so slightly while still remaining minimalist.
If there is anything to be learnt from the very little we have heard from Loveless so far it is that they’re a band who do simplicity to perfection. They don’t need huge, towering drums or wall of sound production to grab your attention. Their stripped to basics, intricate sound is pure precision pop and really lets the strong songwriting stand out.
There’s still very little to be known about Loveless, they’re clearly a band who like to keep their cards close to their chest. Whatever their plan is, it’s working, as with every snippet of sound we hear from them we’re left dying to know more.
