Independent Venue Week
Supporting independent venues across the country, Getintothis’ Adam Lowerson gets the lowdown on a week long celebration of live music.
It’s been an up and down year for Liverpool’s independent venues, we’ve seen the likes of the much loved Mello Mello close its doors, with the future of the Kazimier and Nation now under threat, while brand new venues such as 24 Kitchen Street and the newly reopened Jacaranda have opened for business.
Independent Venue Week, an event which runs all across the UK, is aiming to make 2015 a great year for the indies. Taking place from January 26 to February 1 2015, the nationwide event brings a week of live music to some of the most important performance spaces in the country in support of independently run venues. This year sees 85 venues taking part, with folk singer/songwriter Frank Turner joining the initiative as an ambassador.
Liverpool sees three of its favourite venues, the Lomax, the Zanzibar and the Kazimier joining in this year’s event, with each hosting a week of live music.
The Lomax will feature headline performances from The Real People, Ian McNabb, Nick Harper and the Jar Family, with other sets from acts such as Killaflaw, Tiro Lark, Jimmy and the Revolvers, The Mexanines with much more still to be announced in the coming weeks across all three venues.
The event is now in its third year and in the past has drawn support from Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, Domino Records and Rough Trade, and is growing year on year.
These independent venues are the lifeblood of the national music scene, and as we’ve seen this year are dependent on the support of loyal fans and gig-goers. They may be under appreciated, but as Independent Venue Week is trying to show, you’d definitely miss them if they were ever taken away.
