Kylie Minogue heading to the Echo Arena later this month
After a stellar summer smashing Glastonbury and Castlefield Bowl, the queen of pop Kylie Minogue gets the Top 10 treatment from Getintothis’ Steph Niciu.
It’s fair to say that a pop act with longevity is hard to come by in the industry today. Well, Australian songstress Kylie Minogue is definitely one of them.
A career that has spanned over twenty years, Minogue had humble beginnings, appearing in Neighbours, as the schoolgirl turned mechanic, Charlene Mitchell. She decided to hang up her overalls in 1988, to pursue a singing career and with the help of Pete Waterman, released her debut album, Kylie.
Since then, she’s produced a further eleven studio albums and managed to cement herself as a pop heavyweight.
Her sound is one that never strays too far from being classically ‘Kylie’: Girly, fun and sexy. Not only that, but she isn’t afraid to switch up her style. Who can forget those hotpants?
And over the years, her outfits have become so iconic that an exhibition was dedicated to them at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum back in 2007.
Minogue’s live shows are always nothing short of spectacular. She’s known for big productions with heaps of glitz and glamour.
So, it’s only right that we look at her Top 10. Here it is.
The Loco- Motion from Kylie (1988)
Kylie’s first single for her debut album. Ms Minogue was honing in on the popularity of the dance craze and got us doing the loco-motion.While this wasn’t exactly ground-breaking, lyrically to say the least, it was catchy. And yes, we do still remember the dance. Minus the big 80’s hair, of course.
I Should Be So Lucky from Kylie (1988)
While the original was a big hit, Kylie re-worked the track to feature on her orchestral album Abbey Road Sessions in 2012. The result was a classic version, dripping with elegance. And it proved that Kylie is every inch the showgirl.
Better The Devil You Know from Rhythm of Love (1990)
A 90’s dance hit, Kylie sang about it being alright to take a lover back after he’d been a bit of an idiot. The production was perky with bubbly beats. It was a tune worthy of a good old boogie.
Spinning Around from Light Years (2000)
For a few years, Kylie released records (Think Kylie Minogue and Impossible Princess) that didn’t have as much commercial success. So, by her seventh album Light Years she was looking to re-invent herself. How? By using those gold hot pants and shaking her sound up. And it worked. She became queen of the disco and we couldn’t get enough.
Can’t Get You Out Of My Head from Fever (2001)
‘I just can’t get you outta my head, boy, your lovin’ is all I think about’. No, you’re right, Kylie, we really couldn’t get this out of our head. Released in 2001, this is still awesome. And who can forget the teensy bit of material that she made into a dress for the video? Totally iconic.
Love At First Sight from Fever (2001)
Kylie took risks with this track and they paid off. It was a song that encapsulated falling in love, drawing you in with killer beats and bongos, creating an almost dreamlike sound. In 2003, it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Dance Recording but lost out to Dirty Vegas with Days Go By.
Slow from Body Language (2003)
This track was one of the more unusual offerings from Kylie’s back catalogue. The production was extremely sultry and sexy, something that we might not have encountered as much before. It even featured some slightly dodgy auto-tuning. Complete with a steamy video which saw Minogue writhing around on a towel by the pool, we were hooked.
WOW from X (2007)
A bright, punchy, piano based track. The Boston Globe likened it to Madonna’s Holiday emphasising that it was on ‘studio steroids’. While others claimed that the ‘funked up electro sexiness was ‘a bit contrived.’ Even so, there is no denying that this was a highly energised dance corker.
All The Lovers from Aphrodite (2010)
With the sweet and seductive vocals of Minogue, this was the first single from Aphrodite. A disco track with hints of electropop, it’s a euphoric celebration of love with a stomper of a chorus.
Into The Blue from Kiss Me Once (2014)
The lead single from Kiss Me Once, Kylie’s comeback is one that oozes sophistication. This was the first track that she released following her signing with Jay Z’s Roc Nation management. An appetising slice of europop with those infectious ‘ee ohs’ and strings. It’s a rather generic comeback single but still is in keeping with her signature sound.
