Biennial auctions, Screenadelica, record fairs, Brazilica-sound tracked football and more, Getintothis offers the lowdown on the fringe side to Liverpool Sound City 2014.
Liverpool Sound City has announced it’s final fringe events including special in conversation series’ plus record fairs and the annual John Peel World Cup.
Sound City kicks off on May 1-3 across around 30 venues and pop up DIY spaces with the likes of Albert Hammond Jnr, Drenge, Fuck Buttons and Gruff Rhys featuring on the bill.
As revealed yesterday, Getintothis‘ stage at Nation on Saturday May 3 will feature Mercury nominated Jon Hopkins, GIT Award 2014 nominees Ex-Easter Island Head and Ninetails plus Kazimier in-house band Dogshow with Prides and Erotic Market making up the stellar bill.
Conference attendees, meanwhile, will enjoy in-conversation pieces with DJ and writer Dave Haslam and Sonic Youth‘s Thurston Moore, musician John Robb talking to Gruff Rhys and Quietus editor and GIT Award judge John Doran quizzing John Cale.
The Farm front man Peter Hooton will kick off the panels on the 1 May with a light-hearted look at social media while rare vinyl hunter and label boss Andy Votel will lock horns with Death Waltz Recording Co‘s Spencer Hickman on the cult of vinyl.
On Friday label supremo Alan McGee will be chewing over the re-energised significance of independent record labels with Mark Jones, of Wall of Sound and Paul Hamill from Broken Melody.
Further afield there’s a private art auction in conjunction with Liverpool Biennial featuring a limited edition print by Richard Woods and the opportunity to buy an exclusive poster from Antony Gormley‘s studio signed by the artist.
Elsewhere, Screenadelica (see main pic, featuring Bo Ningen from last year’s antics) returns with a pop-up exhibition; celebrated illustrator Nick Rhodes will be creating live murals across the festival site; The Red Huk DJ Competition will be searching for the next big turntable talent and Buskers Corner will offer new and unsigned acts the chance to tout their tunes.
For the first time the festival will have its very own record fair – Worth the Waxx – promising mountains of vinyl from the 60s to the present.
Sound City has also commandeered the iconic Mersey Ferry on the Saturday afternoon with live acts The Splintered Ukes, The Hummingbirds and the Gentlemen Rogues in tow.
Topping off the fringe activity is the John Peel World Cup on Saturday 3. A tribute to one of Liverpool’s favourite sons the knockout contest features 16 teams made up of bands and industry pros. This year the soundtrack will be provided by a team from the Brazilica Festival who will add a dash of samba sunshine to proceedings.
Additionally, the full list of bands has also been announced.
Tickets and wristbands.
