HIVE and Metal present Unsettle: A cross-media meditation on the Pendle Witch Trials.
Liverpool’s audiovisual witch doctors HIVE Collective are back, teaming up with arts hub Metal on the 400th anniversary of the Pendle Witch Trials.
Through audiovisual pieces, music and spoken word, HIVE, have collaborated with Metal, on a new piece called ‘Unsettle’, a meditation on the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612.
We’re told the event’s six short acts will draw the audience into the world of claustrophobia, dread, mundane ignorance and prejudice that lead to the trial of eleven men and women, ten of whom were later hanged.
Liverpool Philharmonic cellist Jonathan Aasgaard, provides the musical backing; an electronic soundscape inspired by the Black Dyke Band’s performance of Nigel Clarke’s 1996 work ‘The Pendle Witches’.
Sound and visual art will be provided by HIVE including spoken word pieces and strange theatrical interactions evoking a setting for the audience to contemplate these injustices, and draw their own parallels with contemporary society and notions of progress.
Project designer and Behind The wall of Sleep promoter, Sam Wiehl said, “The evening was conceived in response to the 400th anniversary commemorations, but rather than just reflecting the dark history of the 1612 trials we’re looking to explore the collective emotional memories of events that still define
Pendle to this day.
“This unique collaboration between some fantastic artists will provide a thought-provoking experience that we hope will stay with you long after the piece is finished.”
Unsettle takes place on Thursday October 25 at 7.30pm, Metal at Edge Hill. Free entrance (booking required, contact Metal Box Office).
