The Icelandic musician specialising in polite fluttering. Getintothis’ Jon Davies prefers to loudly slurp into his Red Stripe.
A gatecrasher. A total romantic buzz kill. Everyone’s dad, this isn’t where I’m meant to be. Dotted around the floor of Static Gallery‘s floor are two-by-twos of young couples siding up to each other, not exactly in a weird teenage make out room, but I guess more like a seatless cinema, waiting for something like…
I don’t know, Science of Sleep. Here I was, thankfully with Sam from Burneverything, on chairs like real men, in the corner, loudly slurping our Red Stripes, and not too far removed from Statler and Waldorf from The Muppets.
But hey, at least I have someone to sneer with and lots of people to sneer at. Jealous Dad.
Ólöf Arnalds must have been near enough perfect for the attendees, standing on a dimly lit stage alone, her fluttering dulcet voice accompanied only by lilting guitar chords, unobtrusive in terms of volume.
At best it provided a fitting soundtrack to the schmaltzy crowd, politely nodding, tapping and at times humming, but Arnalds unfortunately falls into the same bag of other soft and cuddly singers. She’s very nice, but I wouldn’t fuss over her.
The highlight was her cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s I’m on Fire. However, Arnalds’ intimate songs, sung quiet and quaintly, are warming at best. Next time I’ll do my research and bring a date without a beard…
